Summary
The License Practical Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to patients of an aging adult population. The incumbent demonstrates good clinical practice, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. They provide a wide range of clinical and technical services to Veterans under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Manager within Patient Care Services (PCS). Individuals may work in our Primary Care - PACT Services or in our UAB Specialty Clinic.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Education: Graduate from an approved school of practical or vocational nursing, accredited by the NLNAC or equivalent. Verification can be obtained from the State agency or NLNAC.
- Exceptions include: Military healthcare education or training accepted by the licensing jurisdiction, or individuals licensed without graduation from an approved school under specific conditions.
- Licensure: Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as an LPN/LVN in the U.S. or its territories.
- Experience: GS-6 level requires at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, demonstrating proficiency in patient care.
- Skills: Ability to initiate, perform, and complete assigned duties, recognize patient needs, and document appropriately. Capable of administering medications and performing treatments per policies.
- Knowledge: Understanding of human behavior, patient motivations, and reactions; ability to establish rapport; and to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Physical and Emotional Requirements: Visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity, physical stamina, emotional stability, and the ability to don protective gear as needed.
- Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
Duties
- Provide direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients with complex needs.
- Monitor workload, develop reporting procedures, and participate in quality improvement activities.
- Perform clinical assessments, document findings, and provide patient education.
- Recognize urgent/emergent situations and respond appropriately.
- Administer medications, perform procedures, and ensure safety and comfort.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members and serve as a preceptor for less experienced staff.
- Participate in ongoing education to enhance skills and knowledge.
