The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Inc. is seeking an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse to support direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Nurse Manager or clinical lead.

The role is onsite at 850 Boylston Street, Brookline area, and operates as a per diem schedule with day shifts. Responsibilities include taking patient histories, measuring vital signs, administering medications under supervision, and assisting with treatments.

Qualifications

  • Education: Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma; Licensed Practical Nurse required.
  • Experience: Medical experience 0-1 year preferred.
  • Licenses: LPN license; BLS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients about problems, medications, and allergies; review medical records.
  • Measure and record vital signs (height, weight, temp, BP, pulse, respirations).
  • Perform screening exams as needed (hearing, vision, depression, falls).
  • Administer medications under physician/RN supervision and participate in treatment plans.
  • Provide basic patient care (dressing wounds, assisting with hygiene, transfers).
  • Communicate post-visit findings and care plans to the clinical team.
  • Triage via phones/ messages within scope of LPN practice.
  • Collect samples for lab tests and prepare patients for examinations.

Job Summary Summary

Under the supervision of a Nurse Manager, licensed clinical leader, or non-clinical practice manager – and in collaboration with other team members – provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the scope of practice.

Essential Functions
  • Interviews patients about current problems, medications, and allergies, and reviews medical records for pertinent previous and current information.
  • Measure and record patients' vital signs.
  • Based on the chief complaint, the physician may also perform additional screening exams as needed, such as hearing, vision, depression, and falls assessments.
  • Measure and record patients' vital signs, including height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.
  • Provide basic patient care and treatments, such as dressing wounds, treating bedsores, administering enemas or douches, applying alcohol rubs, massaging, performing catheterizations, administering routine immunizations, and/or providing nebulizer treatments and visual acuity tests.
  • Participates in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse).
  • Communicates post-visit findings and participates in the plan of care, in coordination with the appropriate clinical staff
  • Performs a variety of office responsibilities: answers phones and takes messages, and performs triage within the scope of licensed practical nursing practice in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Collect samples, such as blood, urine, or sputum from patients, and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures.
  • Assist patients with bathing, dressing, maintaining personal hygiene, transferring in bed, and standing and walking.

Education Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma Licensed Practical Nurse required

Licenses and Credentials Licensed Practical Nurse [LPN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of patient education: interviewing and listening skills, teaching and engagement techniques, and understanding of health-related conditions and information.
  • Ability to accurately perform vital signs and obtain pertinent health information, including but not limited to: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, and weight.
  • Ability to administer medication; routes of administration may include injections, intravenous, and oral medications.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform specific procedures and tests as appropriate to the clinical setting.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, clear, and concise manner.
