A Correctional LPN works with a diverse population of offenders who may have a wide range of medical and mental health needs. To ensure the safety of the multidisciplinary staff, the LPN must adhere to the policies and procedures of the correctional facility. All healthcare provided should meet all state and federal regulations regarding offender health care and ethical standards of practice. The LPN has a pivotal role on the multidisciplinary team in aiding in the care, custody, and control of the offender population.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Offender Intake, documentation, and medical records: The LPN is responsible for the medical aspect of the admitting process for each offender. Each offender must have vital signs and a series of screens upon entry into the correctional facility. The LPN is responsible for obtaining a medical history, a list of medications, and medical records for the offender.
- Medication Management: The LPN administers and accurately documents all prescribed medications. Accurate counts and documentation of medications and narcotics are required throughout each shift.
- Triage, medical response, and treatment: The LPN provides prescribed treatments, assists with medical procedures, promptly triages requests for medical treatment, and responds to medical emergencies within the facility.
- Diagnostic testing: The LPN performs minor diagnostic testing, which includes blood glucose tests, routine lab draws, urinalysis, drug screens, pregnancy tests, and TB screens. Vaccines, if needed, are administered by the LPN.
- Medical inventory management: All medical supplies and equipment must have documented, accurate counts. The LPN orders all medical supplies and ensures the proper function of medical equipment.
- Recording keeping, confidentiality, and legal compliance: Accurate medical records of the offenders' health status, progress, and other concerns are kept confidential. The LPN is to ensure that medical records and information are maintained to HIPAA standards.
- Collaboration and communication: Communication between medical staff and external healthcare providers ensures comprehensive care of the offenders.
- Health Education: Education of health conditions, medications, and wellness is important to ensure quality care for the offender population.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current LPN license for the state of Louisiana
- Strong documentation and record-keeping skills
- Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with medical staff, correctional staff, and offenders
- Prior experience in a correctional setting is preferred
