Middle Tennessee State University is seeking a licensed mental health professional to join Counseling Services as a Counselor. The role delivers short-term counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, and outreach to support student mental health and well-being within a collaborative university environment.

This is a full-time, 10-month salaried position with benefits. Work is 37.5 hours per week August–May, with June and July off; salary is paid in 12 equal monthly installments.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family counseling.
• Licensed in Tennessee or pursuing licensure with plan to be fully licensed within two years (or one year for out-of-state applicants to obtain TN license).
• Experience with college/university counseling centers or similar settings preferred.
• Experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention.
• Strong communication and organizational skills; proficient in EHR documentation.

• Offer consultation and outreach to support student well-being and academic success.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Counselor role provides individual short-term counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, and outreach to support the mental health and well-being of a diverse student population. Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough mental health intake assessments and determine the appropriate level of care.
• Experience providing individual counseling using a short-term, goal-oriented model of care.
• Proficiency in crisis intervention, including risk assessment and coordination with community emergency service providers.
• Experience with referral and case management for clients whose specialized or long-term needs require community-based care, with attention to continuity of care.
• Skill in developing and delivering psychoeducational outreach and presentations to students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities, supporting equity and inclusion.
• Collaborative approach to working within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong communication and organizational skills, with proficiency in electronic health records and the ability to complete progress notes and clinical documentation accurately and on time.
• Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family counseling.
• Has applied for Tennessee licensure as an LPC-MHSP, LCSW, LMFT, LSPE-HSP, or PhD/PsyD HSP, with the ability to be fully licensed within two years (candidates licensed in another state must obtain Tennessee licensure within one year).
• Experience in college or university counseling centers, or comparable settings, is preferred.
