Job summary

Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in California seeks a Licensed Embalmer to join a compassionate team dedicated to dignity and respect in every decedent’s final disposition. You will embalm, restore, apply cosmetics, prepare for viewing, meet with families to honor requests, supervise Apprentice Embalmers, and ensure compliance with Forest Lawn policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications

• Current valid California Embalmer License.
• Completed apprenticeship and licensed to perform duties as a Licensed Embalmer in California.
• Associate’s degree in Mortuary Science or Embalming from a two-year college or technical school.
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs and work weekends/extended hours.
• Valid California Driver’s License and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze cases to determine appropriate preparation and care for each decedent.
• Embalm decedents with proper authorizations, ensuring disinfection, preservation, and presentation.
• Dress decedents and apply cosmetics per family requests.
• Perform restorative art and other required restoration tasks.
• Meet with client families to discuss appearance and make adjustments.
• Prepare and place decedents for viewing and final disposition.
• Complete and maintain documentation in line with laws and Forest Lawn policies.
• Assist with disinterment of remains as needed.
• Stock and maintain preparation room and equipment; uphold safety and cleanliness.

Forest Lawn is seeking a Licensed Embalmer to join a team of talented, compassionate professionals dedicated to this unique and meaningful profession. What You’ll Be Doing

• Review and analyze cases to determine the appropriate preparation and care required for each decedent.
• Perform disinfection procedures using external applications of antiseptics and fluids.
• Embalm decedents with the appropriate authorizations, ensuring proper disinfection, preservation, and presentation while utilizing appropriate embalming instruments and equipment.
• Dress decedents and apply cosmetics according to the wishes of the client family.
• Perform restorative art and other restorative procedures as needed.
• Safely place decedents in caskets using an electric lift.
• Meet with client families to ensure their requests regarding the decedent’s appearance have been fulfilled and make adjustments as needed.
• Wrap and prepare un-embalmed remains for cremation or other final dispositions.
• Inspect and evaluate decedents to ensure they are properly prepared and suitable for final disposition in accordance with Forest Lawn policies and procedures.
• Prepare and place decedents in visitation rooms, ensuring arrangements reflect client family requests and applicable religious or cultural traditions.
• Conduct first calls and assist with the transfer of decedents as needed.
• Complete and maintain all required documentation in compliance with applicable laws and Forest Lawn policies and procedures.
• Assist with disinterment of human remains as requested.
• Stock and maintain the preparation room and cooling unit, and assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the mortuary building and restrooms.
• Maintain the jewelry log and order necessary supplies.
• Participate in and, when assigned, lead quality control meetings.
• Instruct and oversee Apprentice Embalmers in case preparation and documentation.
• Maintain a safe work environment and comply with all safety standards, including attending required safety and SDS meetings and wearing appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with Forest Lawn employees while contributing to a collaborative, team-oriented work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Current valid California Embalmer License.

• Completed an apprenticeship and licensed to perform duties as a Licensed Embalmer as defined by the State of California.
• Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in Mortuary Science or Embalming.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Valid California Driver’s License, including state-required levels of active auto insurance.
• Ability to lift 100 lbs.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
