The City of Richmond Public Library is seeking a part-time Temporary Library Technician for the Read with Ripple program. The 20-hour-per-week role focuses on delivering excellent customer service while supporting literacy activities for diverse communities.

Under supervision, you will assist with data gathering, materials development, volunteer coordination, and program outreach to schools and daycares, contributing to the library’s goal to Inform, Enrich, Empower.

The City of Richmond Public Library (RPL) seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as a Part-time Temporary Library Technician - Read with Ripple. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is a self-starter, excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes exceptional customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower.

This position is a part-time (20 hours/week) role at RPL. This position will work under the direct supervision of the Read with Ripple Program Coordinator and in close collaboration with the RPL Youth Service Coordinator.

This class supports the Read with Ripple Program. As assigned, work may include data gathering, basic analysis, developing recommendations, and reports. May assist senior analytical staff and supervisors/managers; serving as a liaison to functions outside of the department, updating and maintaining databases; recommending changes, drafting language, and ensuring dissemination of same, ensuring program functions and events are coordinated as structured.

The position requires a professional and engaging approach to literacy work. Incumbent will work closely with literacy partners from schools to daycares across the city. Position requires the ability to build and maintain relations with volunteers and professionals. Experience managing volunteers is desired. May represent RPL at meetings.

• Will support the Read with Ripple Program as directed by the Program Coordinator

• Aid, update, and develop program materials, including lesson plans as approved by the Program Coordinator
• Collaborate with supervisor in the selection of Read with Ripple books and materials
• Assist Program Coordinator in recruiting and scheduling volunteers for book distribution, reading, and related activities
• Work with supervisor to develop and provide materials for parents and children to support reading at home
• Work with childcare centers and other community partners to organize reading and book distributions
• May participate in library-wide committees or projects

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• The individual can independently perform a variety of tasks in support of a program, operation, or work unit.
• Responsibilities include coordinating, planning, and implementing a program component within a specialized program profession or area (Read with Ripple).
• The position serves as a principal program support resource, regarding processes and procedures applicable to the program.
• Under general supervision, positions in this class receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
• Individual has some knowledge of Early Literacy and/or Child Development skills and concepts.
• The individual is comfortable using computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
• The individual knows how to use standard office equipment. The individual can follow the City Library’s procedures and policies.
• The individual can demonstrate skills on excellent customer service, great interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. The individual will assist in training volunteers.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• A minimum of high school diploma or GED
• One year of public library related support or library outreach experience
• An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Some positions may require a valid driver’s license with an acceptable record and a Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
• The successful applicant must pass a background check.

PREFFERED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• Early education or early literacy training or experience preferred.
• Spanish language skills are a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, perform repetitive motions, stand, finger, and walk; frequently reach, grasp, lift, pull, and push; and occasionally climb, stoop, crouch, and feel. The working conditions may contain environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
