Job description

Overview

Library Technician role at DC Department of Human Resources. This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC), Education Division. DOC ensures public safety for citizens of the District by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community reintegration. This role functions as a Library Technician of a small law reference library, providing technical support by performing a wide variety of services to residents, including primary source material mandated by law, electronic research systems, and other library operations support. Collaborates with DC Public Library (DCPL) staff, who provide leisure library services, in support of the DOC's educational programs.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides library services and references to legal services in accordance with prescribed guidelines and performs acquisitions duties.
  • Keeps legal reference material up-to-date by acquiring updated versions of the electronic legal research systems provided to residents.
  • Assesses feedback from DOC staff and residents to determine which law library materials to acquire for education programs.
  • Explains the general arrangement and resources of the law library to users and assists in locating and selecting legal materials through available electronic systems and any legal reference collections.
  • Monitors resident clerks (legal assistants) in providing assistance to other residents for legal research, and provides training to resident clerks in legal research and maintenance of pertinent records.
  • Assists residents and resident clerks in resolving problems with research, explains institutional rules and regulations, and refers residents to appropriate sources for assistance.
  • Reviews the DOC College and Career Readiness mailbox daily to respond with law library information in paper-based format; reports responses to housing units; monitors and updates spreadsheets recording law library materials delivered to each resident.
  • Monitors behavior of assigned resident clerks to detect potential security issues and reports observations to appropriate officials; works with DCPL staff to ensure cohesiveness and resolve issues; executes and controls funding for library expenditures and revises the Law Library schedule in coordination with DCPL librarians.
Qualifications And Education

Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position, typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have one year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required to have general experience, education above high school level, or additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualifications.

Physical Demands

The work is generally sedentary; work activities involve walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds, or occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an institutional office setting with normal safety precautions. The library technician is also responsible for visiting designated housing units to deliver requested legal research information.
