POSITION
GENERAL SUMMARY

The Town of Littleton is seeking qualified applicants for a 19 hour/week Library Technician position in the Reuben Hoar Library starting July 1, 2025. Responsibilities include the circulation of materials to and from the public through integrated library system transactions. Ready reference and reader’s advisory skills required. May be required to engage in some library programming and the creation of displays independently or under the direction of a senior librarian. While primarily responsible for working at the main circulation desk, must be willing to work with all departments (Children’s, YA, and Adult) as the need arises. Some supervision of Library Assistants and volunteers required in the absence of a senior librarian. Nights and some Saturdays required.

Successful candidates will have an Associates Degree; and two years of practical library experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Background in automated library circulation and technical procedures, familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System, excellent customer service skills, and general knowledge of computers and the internet a must. Some heavy lifting (30-50 lbs) may be required. Ability to lift and shelve books in high and low places. Position will be subject to a thorough background check.

Full pay range is $26.35/hour-$32.90/hr, commensurate with experience. This is a nonexempt, non-benefits eligible position governed by the Personnel By-Law and Employee Handbook.

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Purpose:

Performs responsible direct service work for the smooth operations of the library, assisting patrons with their library needs, computers, scheduling of meeting rooms, item requests, and to work with the other Library staff as a team member. Performs all other related work as required.

Supervision:

Supervision Scope:Performs varied and responsible duties requiring the exercise of basic judgment and initiative to perform duties, complete assigned tasks, and analyze the facts or circumstances surrounding individual problems.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Librarian; all unusual situations or questions are referred to supervisor.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision to two library assistants and volunteers.

Work is performed under typical library conditions. Library operating hours may require evening and weekend work.

Operates computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment.

Has constant contact with library patrons. Contacts are in person and involve an information exchange dialogue.

Has access to confidential patron records.

Errors could result in reduced levels of library services, poor public relations for the library, damage to library resources, and have possible legal repercussions.

EssentialFunctions:

Under the Head of Circulation, provides courteous and timely movement of materials to and from the public and engages in all integrated library system transactions: patron registrations, check-in and checkout of library print and non-print materials, renewals and holds, patron and title data inquiry, network transfers, reservations for museum passes, and all aspects of automated circulation within a networked and Regional environment.

Responsible for automated maintenance of circulation and registration records, coordination of overdue/reserve files, notification and billing, all aspects of overdue retrieval and fine collection, and all local circulation of network transfers, ILL’s and regional shared resources.

Responsible for collecting and issuing receipts for fines, lost materials, Friends notebook sales, Friends coffee money. Ensures that monies have proper receipts issued and are directed to appropriate depositories in Administration or to appropriate member network libraries.

Responsible for the timely processing of considerable quantities of incoming and outgoing network transfers and inter-library loans at the Circulation desk-combining items being held for the same patron and pulling expired holds form the Hold Shelf.

Makes daily calls to patrons for whom items are being held – alerting patrons as to reserves, hold deadlines, and circulation loan periods.

Serves as an initial point of public contact within the facility, providing both in-person and telephone primary interface with the public.

May provide back-up ready and in-depth reference services for Children’s desk, as staffing levels dictate.

Provides patron assistance with ready reference and Readers’ Advisory support, utilizing Readers Advisory resources.

May provide collection displays on a monthly basis in fiction and nonfiction areas to encourage patron reading in new and different themes. Encourages and assists other staff members to create displays. Prepares complimentary displays for adult programming.

Apprises Head of Circulation of public trends, technology changes and improvements, needs and issues warranting a policy or procedural change. Stays aware of current trends and policy and procedural changes within the Library.

Based on need, is required to work flexible hours, performing additional duties as assigned.

Schedules meeting rooms when necessary using library meeting room policies.

Catalog new periodicals to add to collection. Discard old periodicals using age policy.

Responsible for following opening and closing procedures for the library building.

Assists patrons with problems on computers and/or printers.

Assists in developing the collection by reading and making selections from journals, suggesting areas for weeding and discarding.

Maintains community bulletin board following library policy.

Continues education by reading professional literature and attending workshops/courses on library-related services and subjects.

Performs similar or related work as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education.TrainingandExperience:

Associates Degree helpful; and two years of practical library experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Background in automated library circulation and technical procedures.

Knowledge.AbilityandSkill:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of library principles and procedures. Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System. Basic knowledge of books, authors, and titles. General knowledge of MS Office products or similar software.

Ability: Ability to communicate effectively with the all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to understand and follow instructions in a technologically changing environment. Ability to file alphabetically and numerically. Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment. Ability to work independently.

Skill:Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment. Excellent customer service skills. A high level of patience.
