Job summary

City of Hoover Library seeks a customer‑oriented library assistant to support material selection, reader advisory services, and passport/notary duties. The role includes operating the Bookmobile and coordinating adult programs across divisions, with a focus on serving diverse community needs.

You will plan outreach to senior living facilities, curate collections, and assist patrons with databases and online resources. A flexible schedule is required, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with two years of library experience or an associates degree with one year of library experience or a bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Experience operating a computer, including Microsoft Office.
• Excellent internal and external customer service skills.
• Ability to maneuver among high and low shelves and to load/unload heavy carts and equipment.
• Flexible schedule including weekdays, nights and weekends.
• Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain/maintain City of Hoover Driver's Permit.
• Passport certification not required at apply but must be obtained within 6 months.
• Notary Public not required at apply but must be obtained within 6 months.
• Master's Degree in Library Science preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist patrons with material selection and downloadables; respond to reader's advisory questions; provide passport agent services; notarize documents.
• Plan and implement adult library programs and services; coordinate outreach to senior living facilities.
• Analyze the department's collection to meet community needs; classify materials; manage holds and inter-library loans.
• Assist patrons with Internet searches and electronic databases; keep statistics; update procedures.
• Operate the Bookmobile to promote library services; manage vehicle maintenance and coordinate with Fleet Management.
• Supervise the department on nights and weekends in the absence of the Coordinator; perform other duties as assigned.
