Job summary

Mountainside Public Library in New Jersey seeks a dedicated librarian to serve as Library Director for our growing community. The candidate will lead staff of around 15, oversee a nearly $1M annual budget, and guide strategic initiatives aligned with our mission and municipal partners.

The position starts January 4, 2027 and requires an MLS/MLIS (ALA-accredited) and NJ State Certification, plus 5+ years of library experience with supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program and New Jersey State Certification required.
• Five years of progressively responsible library experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
• Three to five years’ experience as a professional librarian with supervisory experience preferred.
• Proven success in community engagement, partnership development and outcome delivery with quantifiable results.
• Experience with budget preparation and management.
• Proficiency with technology and automated library systems.
• Candidate must be willing to submit to a background investigation.
• References may be requested.

Responsibilities

• Administration of the Mountainside Public Library, including management of public and technical services, programming, and annual operating budget review.
• Develop strategic initiatives for growth and development of library services.
• Oversee library promotion through newspapers, appearances, social media, and web pages.
• Seek funding through grants and community organizations.
• Maintain effective communication with the Board of Trustees, officials, and stakeholders.
• Prepare for and attend Library Board meetings; report monthly narratives and statistics.
• Recruit, hire, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
• Stay current with professional developments and laws.
• Guide a $300k renovation project (rooms, flooring, children’s area, program room, and staff space).
