Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage seeks a Library Clerk for the Library at 3600 Denali Street. Open to the public and AMEA members, with Sunday–Thursday shifts and a Monday late shift.

You will handle circulation tasks, register patrons, assist with reference, operate the cash register, support programs and volunteers, and maintain equipment. A background check and U.S. work eligibility are required.

Qualifications

  • High school, GED, or the equivalent and one year of customer service and/or library experience.
  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation at time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform circulation tasks: charging, discharge, renew and route library materials.
  • Register patrons for library cards and help patrons locate materials.
  • Operate cash register and complete cash and credit card transactions, initiate customer refunds as appropriate.
  • Assist with bus passes, voter registration and other specialized services.
  • Answer phones; communicate by email. Provide ready reference assistance and help with library technologies.
  • Assist with library programs and events and train/assign tasks to volunteers.
  • Perform all duties of library clerk and library assistant I as assigned.

Job description

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Department, Hours, Location
  • Department: Library
  • Hours of Work: Sunday through Thursday, with a late shift on Monday
  • Location: 3600 Denali Street

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

To be considered for employment, candidates must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.

Perform circulation tasks: charging, discharge, renew and route library materials. Empty book drops and automated handling carts. Register patrons for library cards. Help patrons locate materials, place requests, and use library equipment. Respond to questions about library policy/procedure. Research materials status. Operate cash register and credit card console. Complete cash and credit card transactions, initiate customer refunds as appropriate, prepare and make bank deposits. Assist with bus passes, voter registration and other specialized services. Answer phones; communicate by email. Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of library equipment. Provide public assistance with library technologies, including computers, copiers, printers and other devices. Provide ready reference assistance to the public, including knowledge of library website and downloading of materials. Assist with library programs and events, both inside and outside the library. Receive operate/office supplies. Train and assign tasks to volunteers. Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers, public vendors; treat everyone with honesty, respect and fairness to build an environment of trust; contribute to a collaborative, committed and collegial work environment. Perform all duties of library clerk and library assistant I and other duties as assigned.

Personal Suitability Qualifications

Per Municipal Code 3.30.024.D Personal suitability qualifications commonly required by any employee occupying a position in any class, such as good character, loyalty, honesty, demeanor, industry, amenability to supervision, and willingness to cooperate with associates shall be qualifications required for each position.

Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.

If selected for hire, the applicant must be capable of bending, stooping, stretching, lifting boxes weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, pushing fully loaded book trucks, and standing for up to four (4) hours at a time.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
