Job summary

The Decatur Public Library is seeking a customer-focused Library Assistant to connect people with books, technology, programs, and resources. You will help create a welcoming space where lifelong learning thrives and support library operations, assist patrons, organize collections, and deliver programs that enrich the community.

You’ll provide outstanding customer service, process holds and interlibrary loans, shelve materials, and help plan programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in the social sciences.
  • Previous library experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Knowledge of books and authors.

The Decatur Public Library is looking for a customer-focused Library Assistant to help connect people of all ages with books, technology, programs, and resources. Every day offers the opportunity to assist patrons, support educational programs, recommend resources, and help create a welcoming space where lifelong learning thrives.

As a Library Assistant, you’ll provide outstanding customer service while supporting library operations, assisting patrons, organizing collections, and helping deliver programs that enrich our community.

What You’ll Do
Serve Our Community
  • Assist patrons in person, by phone, and with library technology.
  • Help visitors locate materials and access library resources.
Support Library Services
  • Process holds and interlibrary loans.
  • Shelve materials, create displays, and maintain library collections.
  • Assist with daily library operations.
Engage the Community
  • Help plan and conduct programs, story times, and educational activities.
  • Coordinate services for homebound patrons with volunteer assistance.
Administrative & Technical Support
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, collect fees, and provide computer assistance and training as assigned.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in the social sciences.
  • Previous library experience is preferred.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of books, authors, and published materials.
  • Basic knowledge of library science principles and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of office procedures and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
Skills & Abilities
  • Learn and use the library’s catalog and computer systems.
  • Work independently after training while following established procedures.
  • Prepare basic reports and maintain records.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and coworkers.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, including in challenging situations.
  • Build positive relationships with patrons of all ages.
  • Work evenings and weekends as scheduled.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry boxes of library materials.
  • Perform repetitive motions and maintain full range of mobility.
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, stoop, push, pull, and lift library materials throughout the workday.
  • Have adequate vision, including depth perception and color vision, to safely perform job duties.
