Job summary

University of California, Merced is seeking a Night/Weekend Services Coordinator for the Access Services Unit. You will oversee evening and weekend library operations, supervise student assistants, and ensure smooth desk coverage and safety.

You will train staff, prepare procedures, and support library programs and data reporting. This role requires flexible hours, strong customer service, and knowledge of MS Word/Excel.

Responsibilities

Pay and Job Details

The full salary range for this position is Step 1: $27.74/hr - Step 17: $36.08/hr. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 1: $27.74/hr. This is a temporary, union position represented by Clerical & Allied Services — CX Teamsters Local 2010. The schedule for this position is Friday 2pm-6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm and it operates during the 16-week academic semesters. The position will not work during winter intercession or summer. Remote/Hybrid eligibility: In-Person.

In addition, please note: This is a temporary position. The job is subject to closing with the specified terms for employment and union representation.

The Job

The Access Services Unit is the primary customer service unit of the Library. Access Services operations include information delivery, customer service, course resources, collection maintenance, and stacks operations. The Night/Weekend Services Coordinator is responsible for the night/weekend operation of Library services during assigned shifts, including opening/closing on weekends and coordinating student employees’ work assignments. The role orients and counsels student employees on policies and procedures, trains and coordinates their work, and sets priorities for nights and weekends (desk staffing, circulation operations, customer support, shelving, and related tasks). The role records unit statistics, responds to security alarms, and ensures knowledge of opening/closing procedures. It also provides basic support and troubleshooting for Library computers and printers and assists patrons with Library tools and resources.

The Access Services unit employs approximately 20-25 student assistants (10-15 FTE). The Night/Weekend Services Coordinator supports building operations, assessments, departmental inventories, and equipment surplus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Night/Weekend Library Service Operations: coordinates activities at the Help Desk (1st floor) and Library Services Desk (2nd floor) and throughout the Library during evening and weekend hours to align with daytime operations.
  • Security and Emergencies: respond to alarms and incidents, follow policies, perform routine checks, and assume primary responsibility for emergency response as needed.
  • Supervision: supervise 10–15 FTE student assistants, support other Library units, coordinate projects such as database checks and statistics.
  • Training/Coaching: train student employees and staff in circulation, course reserve, and related Access Services functions.
  • Procedures/Training Manuals: write procedural documents and training materials for areas of responsibility.
  • Equipment: manage daily operations and maintenance of Access Services equipment.
  • Shelving Operations: oversee shelving, shelf reading, and related tasks; coordinate large shelving projects.
  • Building/Facility: manage building activity outside normal hours; report and resolve facility or safety issues.
  • User Support: address user concerns and resolve library operation issues; escalate when needed.
Library Programming Support
  • Support routine processes related to ongoing Library operations under supervision.
  • Schedule and plan training events; coordinate with Library Administration.
  • Assist with data collection and documentation for reporting.
  • Serve as the primary resource for Library room reservations.
  • Assist with building assessments and Library Facilities/Building operations and Library Programs, including occupancy, lighting, noise, furniture, and carpets assessments.
  • Provide information and reference service at the Library Services Desk; refer complex questions to professional staff.
Other Duties
  • Local service: participate in local committees and teams as assigned.
  • Project Management: manage projects in support of Library and Access Services goals.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma, GED, HSED or equivalent.

  • Recent library public service experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library public services.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize work and work independently or in a team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based programs, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Ability to search the internet and familiarity with email programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with proper grammar and business formats.
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to interact effectively with the public in a library setting; available to work night and weekend shifts.
Critical Knowledge and Skills
  • Recent library public service experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library public services and standard office practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Excel; ability to use internet and email.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with diverse users.
  • Available to work night and weekend shifts.
  • Preferred: CDL knowledge, UC Library Search, Ex Libris Alma ILS, and related library policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of library operations, safety, interlibrary loan principles, and general IT troubleshooting as applicable.
  • Proven ability to train, direct, and delegate work; strong organizational and teamwork skills.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and the ability to adapt staffing needs; calm under pressure during emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate technical problems to staff and users with varying technical knowledge.
  • Familiarity with library operations terminology and catalog systems.
  • Proven ability to learn and apply new technical information; maintain discretion, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
