Job summary

Kansas City Public Library is hiring at the Bluford Branch for two part-time positions. You will provide essential circulation and patron services, process transactions, and assist patrons with computers and databases. Must be able to lift items and work a varied schedule in a community-focused setting.

The two roles require a high school diploma or GED and preferred customer service experience. Bilingual abilities are a plus to support a diverse patron base in Kansas City, MO.

Qualifications

  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn library systems.
  • English communication required; multi-language skills advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic circulation and registration services to patrons.
  • Assist patrons with databases, computers and software.
  • Handle transactions, fines, and card requests; explain policies.
  • Answer calls and direct to appropriate staff; maintain courtesy.
  • Lift and shelve materials; process Interlibrary Loan requests.
  • Support branch programs and special events as needed.

  • 24 hours per week.
  • $17.07 per hour.
  • Currently hiring for two positions
Schedule 1

Sunday: 10:30A.M. - 5P.M. Monday - Wednesday: 2:00P.M. - 8:00P.M.

Schedule 2

Wednesday - Thursday: 2:00P.M. - 8:00P.M., Friday - Saturday: 11:00A.M. -5:00P.M.

Job Duties (Essential Functions)
  1. Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects fines and charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.
  2. Maintains effective courteous working relationships with all library patrons and staff.
  3. Assists patrons with use of library databases, computer equipment, and software.
  4. Courteously answers telephone by identifying self and location, and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person.
  5. Lifts, routes and shelves materials, which may weigh up to 35 pounds, from book bins and shelves.
  6. Processes patrons' request material; prepares and sends Interlibrary Loan requests.
  7. Performs other related work and as assigned, such as Kid’s café, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities developed and promoted by other Library colleagues.
Branch Specific Duties

Bluford is a designated United States Village Post Offices. Employees at this branch additionally sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.

Work Environment

Work is performed at the Bluford Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.

Requirements

  1. Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages.
  2. Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  3. Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.
  4. Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.
  5. Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level. Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  6. Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
  7. Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 10-15 lbs.
  8. Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  9. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  10. Ability to effectively communicate and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Customer Service experience preferred.
