Job summary

The John C. Circulation Duties: Provide assistance to library patrons of all ages and abilities by performing a variety of general, basic, routine and moderately complex tasks, using personal, administrative and technical skills and knowledge.

  • Ability to work evenings
  • Experience working with people in a library/educational setting preferred
  • Basic computer knowledge including searching, internet, basic typing skills, using Publisher and Microsoft Office Word

Position Title: LIBRARY ASSISTANT (ALL STAFF)
Reports to: Library Director
Screening: Background check prior to hiring. Random drug testing if requested
Evaluation: Written and conducted after 90 day probationary period and then annually by Director.
Position Purpose

Duties and skills
  1. 1. Prioritizes duties and can multi-task effectively.
  2. 2. Uses the library’s computer system, other databases, standard print, reference, and periodical literature, to assist patrons in locating materials and finding information.
  3. 3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons.Ability to be a team member, assisting others when needed.
  4. 4. Uses the library’s computerized circulation system to assist patrons in borrowing, returning, and renewing materials. Locates and checks out hold material.
  5. 5. Receives monetary payments and donations, makes change, and writes receipts at the circulation desk as needed, using the computerized cash register.
  6. 6. Assists patrons in filling out the library card application. Issues library cards and enters data into the proper database. Enters and updates notes into patron account records when needed.
  7. 7. Uses the library’s patron computer to assist patrons in use of Internet, online catalog, accessing electronic databases, using CD programs, conducting research, pursuing online education and general computer usage.Assists patrons with personal computer needs.
  8. 8. Assists patrons with use of printer/copier/scanner and knows how to use, inspect and make minor repairs on copy, fax, and printing equipment. Notifies the Assistant Director promptly of service needs.
  9. 9. Knows how to clean and maintain exterior computer equipment and does so routinely.
  10. 10. Knows how to do minor computer software troubleshooting and has rudimentary knowledge of library computer network system. Promptly informs staff computer technician of any problems.
  11. 11. Explains library programs and events, services, regulations, and policies and resolves both basic and more involved complaints with patrons.
  12. 12. Assists in the processing of interlibrary or telephone requests from patrons or other libraries when needed.
  13. 13. Checks in books and other library materials. Shelves material according to the book or material type in the proper place. May assist with weeding and inventory.
  14. 14. Reads shelves periodically during work hours to make sure all books and other library materials are in their proper place and re-shelves if necessary.
  15. 15. Maintains study, play and all other library areas by re-shelving materials left on tables, floors, chairs, etc. and keeping the library looking neat and orderly.
  16. 16. Answers telephones and determines needs of caller. Provides basic and routine answers to questions. Refers callers to proper people when appropriate. Takes and delivers messages accurately.
  17. 17. Performs duties thoroughly and follows through to completion in a timely manner.
  18. 18. Opens and closes library following proper procedures.
  19. 19. Willing to be cross‑trained and assist colleagues with departmental duties.Is aware of what needs to be done and does so without being asked.
  20. 20. Have all materials to be published by the library proof read by Assistant Director or Director and give a copy to Director.
  21. 21. Attends conferences and workshops (both online and in person) when library schedule and budget allows to stay current with local and national library trends, laws, collaborative efforts, technology, grants and networking opportunities that will directly benefit our library.
  22. 22. Any and all duties as requested and required by the Director.

  4. 4. Takes time to know what’s going on in community and can refer interested patrons to appropriate source for information.
  5. 5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library employees, patrons and trustees.Ability to be a team member, assisting others when needed.
  6. 6. Have excellent verbal communication, listening and problem solving skills.Maintains a professional and fair attitude when resolving problems with patrons/staff using independent judgment within procedural boundaries when making decisions regarding these matters.
