Job summary

Job description

The Library Aide helps create a welcoming, organized library through excellent customer service and accurate handling of library materials. The position specializes in assisting patrons at public service desks and returning materials to the shelves promptly and in the correct order.

Library Aides also perform a variety of daily support duties, including circulation, book-drop processing, basic technology assistance, materials processing, collection maintenance, and support for library programs and projects. Work is performed under regular supervision and follows established library policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service and Circulation
  • Welcome patrons and provide courteous, equitable, and helpful service in person, by telephone, and by email.
  • Check library materials in and out, process holds, register patrons for library cards, and assist with routine account questions.
  • Help patrons locate materials and provide basic information about library collections, services, programs, and policies.
  • Answer directional and routine informational questions and refer questions requiring additional authority or expertise to the appropriate staff member.
  • Provide basic assistance with the library catalog, eBooks and other digital resources, public computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and similar equipment.
  • Protect patron privacy and confidentiality and help maintain a welcoming, safe, and orderly public service environment.
Shelving and Materials Handling
  • Empty book drops; sort, check in, and place returned materials on book carts.
  • Shelve books, audiovisual materials, periodicals, and other items accurately and promptly.
  • Shelf-read and shift collections, correct misplaced materials, straighten shelves, and keep materials in proper order.
  • Search for missing or damaged items and retrieve materials from shelves using assigned reports or lists.
  • Receive and perform routine processing of new materials, periodicals, and other items according to established procedures.
  • Identify damaged materials and take the appropriate actions.
General Library Support
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures when assigned.
  • Support library programs and projects through room setup, material preparation, cleanup, attendance support, or other assigned tasks.
  • Operate standard office and library equipment and complete routine filing, data entry, and recordkeeping.
  • Work cooperatively with staff throughout the library system and communicate clearly about incomplete work, patron needs, or operational concerns.
  • Participate in training and adapt to changes in library technology, procedures, and service needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, public library procedures, circulation practices, shelving systems, and basic library equipment.
  • Ability to arrange materials accurately in alphabetical, numerical, chronological, and Dewey Decimal order.
  • Strong customer-service skills and the ability to interact tactfully with patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to learn and accurately use an integrated library system and other databases.
  • Proficiency with email, computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and standard office technology.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and established routines.
  • Ability to perform detailed and repetitive tasks accurately while managing interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously in person, in writing, by telephone, and by email.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, service-oriented team.
  • Dependability, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to respectful and welcoming service.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school may be considered. Previous customer-service, retail, clerical, volunteer, or public library experience is preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Regularly stand and walk for extended periods, with intermittent sitting at a public service desk or computer workstation.
  • Frequently reach, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, and turn while retrieving, sorting, and shelving materials.
  • Retrieve and shelve materials from floor level to above shoulder height, using an approved step stool when necessary.
  • Frequently handle books and perform repetitive hand and finger movements associated with sorting, shelving, keyboarding, scanning, and processing materials.
  • Occasionally lift and carry boxes, bins, supplies, or library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Push, pull, and maneuver loaded book carts on level indoor surfaces.
  • Read call numbers, labels, barcodes, fine print, and information displayed on computer screens.
  • Work in an indoor public library environment with moderate noise, frequent interruptions, and regular public interaction.

LOCATION

Fishersville Library, 1759 Jefferson Highway, Fishersville, VA 22939

HOURS

This is a part-time, 20-hours per week position. The schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on library operation and coverage needs. Hours of operation at the Fishersville Branch are Monday through Saturday, 8:30AM to 8:00PM. The position is on-site and in-person.

HOURLY WAGE

$13.99/hour
