Job summary

City of Lynchburg, VA is seeking a professional librarian to plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate Bookmobile services and outreach. The role includes collection development, programming, and supervising Bookmobile staff, working with the Bookmobile Manager of Operations to ensure high-quality service.

The candidate will drive the Bookmobile, engage with the community at nights, weekends, and events, and collaborate with library staff on special projects.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program is required.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional library experience including supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of modern library services, collection development, programming, outreach, and digital resources.
  • Must complete IS100 and IS700 NIMS training within 90 days of employment; higher levels may be required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and suitable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate library services and outreach delivered through the Lynchburg Public Library’s Bookmobile.
  • Oversee collection development, programming, outreach, and supervision/evaluation of Bookmobile staff.
  • Collaborate with Bookmobile Manager of Operations to ensure high-quality service.
  • Drive the Bookmobile vehicle and work nights, weekends, and during special events.
  • Supervise staff directly and participate in hiring, training, and performance assessments.

Job description

Performs professional library work planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating library services and outreach provided through the Lynchburg Public Library’s Bookmobile. The successful candidate will be responsible for collection development, programming, community outreach, and the supervision and evaluation of Bookmobile staff. Works collaboratively with the Bookmobile Manager of Operations to ensure effective, responsive, and high-quality Bookmobile service. This position will work directly on the Bookmobile and drive the vehicle and will be required to work nights, weekends, and special community events.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises assigned staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Additional Duties
  • Collaborates with other library staff members as requested on special projects
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery

Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required.
  • Minimum three to five years of professional library experience, including supervisory experience, required. Strong knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library service, including automated systems, collection development, programming, outreach, and digital resources. Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and public engagement skills.
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with City standards. City Driving Criteria
