Job summary

Lexington County Public Library in South Carolina seeks a Librarian to serve as Manager on Duty, planning and delivering literacy programs and providing technology and reference services to the community. Job Description

Requires public speaking. Schedule includes evening/weekend work including Sundays. Serves as Manager on Duty as needed. Must be able to provide own transportation to outreach and community events.* Description: Serves the community's informational and literacy needs by providing professional literacy programs, training in utilizing library services, and a collection of age, subject, and interest appropriate materials. Plans and implements programs and outreach. Provides technology and reference assistance. Responsible for managing specific collections; including planning within the budget allocation. Advocates all library services, technologies, and programs to the community; establishes partnerships and builds relationships with educational institutions and businesses within the community. Serves on System Committees.



  • Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs for adults and/or youth. Plans and implements workshops, group trainings, and one‑on‑one trainings for patrons, teachers, daycare providers, home school parents, and civic groups. Analyzes current levels of in‑house and outreach programming services and patron demand to determine need for new programming types or changes in amounts or frequency of programming. Stays up to date on trends in programming.

  • Evaluates and manages assigned collections. Reviews and selects materials for acquisition. Manages weeding and replacement of materials as needed. Collaborates with other librarians to determine how budget will be appropriated for materials in department. Evaluates donated materials for inclusion in collection. Serves the library system by sitting on or chairing collection‑focused committees. Evaluates professional book reviews, statistics, and reports related to collection management in the selection and deselection of materials. Organizes materials in assigned public services department for optimal use. Selects and evaluates online resources.

  • Provides reference services to patrons including researching and answering references questions in person, over the telephone, online, and in writing. Instructs library patrons in using various resources and equipment of the library, as well as library‑owned and patron‑owned technology. Refers patrons to other sources and libraries. Interprets library policies and procedures to the public. Processes inter‑library loan requests and maintains records and statistics. Provides Reader's Advisory services for adults and children. Creates or oversees the creation of bibliographies and creative displays; maintains and updates reference files.

  • Promotes the library and its services and programs to the public; makes media and public appearances. Creates and evaluates marketing pieces such as brochures, signs, fliers, etc. to promote programs and services. Leads group tours of the library; establishes relationships and collaborates with civic groups, businesses, schools, and other community organizations; attends county and community meetings as appropriate.

  • Serves as Manager on Duty and delegates tasks to other staff members as needed; coaches and mentors subordinates and colleagues. Interviews, trains, and supervises volunteers and interns; assists in the training processes for other employees. Assists in establishing and implementing policies, procedures, and goals for assigned branch and department. Coordinates ordering of necessary supplies and equipment. Serves the library on professional committees.

  • Performs a variety of functions daily to keep library operational. May open and close facility. Updates signage and flyers. Maintains physical appearance, supplies, and seating/collaborative spaces for public. Proactively addresses basic safety and security issues.

  • Performs other similar duties as assigned Salary Range: $49,124.70-$52,563.43 DOQ
