The City of Virginia Beach Public Library is seeking a talented full time Librarian I-Youth to join our fantastic Library team! This candidate will provide advanced library services to internal and external customers; promote the library’s collection and services through instruction, tours, displays, programs, and other activities. Duties may be added to ensure the day-to-day workflow and service delivery in the public library. As part of a collaborative library system, staff may occasionally have opportunities or be reassigned to support service needs at other locations within the system Librarian I – Youth duties include but are not Limited to:

Must be able to obtain a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited college or university which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position within twelve (12) months of hire date. Failure to obtain an MLIS within twelve (12) months will result in a demotion to the next vacancy where the employee is minimally qualified.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
