Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
  • Investigates, compiles, and analyzes information obtained through the investigative process in support of CIU operations; does related work as required.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze information for statistical reports.
  • Participates in the investigation of violations of State and Local Laws as well as potential violations of the Prison Rape and Elimination Act that occur in the Virginia Beach Jail such cases are not investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Department.
  • This position is a part‑time sworn position; with the same authority as full‑time deputy sheriffs.
  • During investigations he/she will be responsible for the collection of evidence for possible criminal or administrative prosecution.
  • Conduct internal administrative investigations as directed by the Sheriff or his designee.
  • Conduct specialized investigations into gang, predatory and other illicit activity by inmates that takes place within the confines of the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.
  • Conducts research in order to gather information and data needed to correctly analyze trends, potential behavior problems, gang activity, etc.; performs statistical analysis to develop viable recommendations and ensure the ongoing effectiveness of assignments as related to divisional or departmental mission.

Applicants must successfully complete each component of the process before moving to the next step. The selection process includes the following components: Completion of application, oral interview, and background investigation. Work hours are flexible and may be adjusted based on operational needs and candidate availability. Preference: Prefer individuals with previous interviewing and investigative experience, as well as knowledge of gang-related activity. Individual must demonstrate respect, integrity and strong interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four (4) calendar years of full‑time paid service as a Law Enforcement Office or Deputy Sheriff.
  • Must be DCJS Jailor and/or Law Enforcement Certified.
  • If retired, candidate must be hired within twenty‑four (24) months of the retirement date.
  • Must meet all employment requirements as a sworn member of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.
  • Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia of North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
  • Must be classified as fit for employment by the Occupational Health Office.
Special Requirements:
  • Periodic renewal of all official certifications/licenses including qualification for firearms and eligible for issuance of a handgun permit by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must be able to work various hours (including days, nights, weekends and holidays) and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.
  • Positive drug tests results may result in discipline up to and including termination.
  • This classification has been designated as Alpha I, requiring appointees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.
  • Part‑time deputies are not permitted to work extra‑duty assignments for compensation.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the State of North Carolina
  • Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application
  • Successful completion of the selection process, including written test, physical ability test, full background investigation, face‑to‑face interview, polygraph, medical and psychological exams
  • Must be classified as fit for employment by the Occupational Health Office
  • Must refrain from using tobacco products on the job
  • Appointees must successfully complete the Basic Academy
  • Successful completion includes passing all phases of academic, physical (e.g. running, defensive tactics), driving and firearms training
  • In-service training and firearms training qualifications are job requirements throughout employment
  • Basic computer/data entry skills are required for the purposes of report writing and other documentation
  • Employees work includes days, nights, weekends and holidays
