Overview

The Yale Divinity Library seeks a librarian to advance the Divinity Library's engagement with World Christianity through international outreach and the development of globally diverse collections. This librarian will serve as a member of a team of subject specialists at the Divinity Library providing outreach to students and faculty, with particular attention to the international student community at Yale Divinity School. The Librarian for World Christianity will also collaborate with area studies librarians across the University Library to strengthen collection development partnerships and to build collections that reflect the global scope of Christianity.

Reporting to the Director of the Divinity Library, the Librarian for World Christianity participates in library, school, and university-wide committees and task forces, and engages with regional, national, and international professional societies.

The budgeted salary for this position is $70,000-95,000.

Required Skills And Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of the history, theology, and contemporary contexts of World Christianity, with a focus on the scholarly literature, publishing landscapes, and research trends of Christianity in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and/or their diasporas.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to communicate effectively across cultural and linguistic contexts with international students, visiting scholars, and global partners.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to solve problems creatively and manage complex workflows, including fellowship and visiting scholar programs. Ability to apply a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively and build partnerships with varied groups in a complex and rapidly changing team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability building diverse library collections, including experience with international acquisitions, vendor relations, or cooperative collection development.
Preferred Skills And Abilities
  • Earned doctoral degree in World Christianity, mission studies, theology, history, or a related discipline, strongly preferred.
  • Reading proficiency in one or more languages relevant to the study of World Christianity. Knowledge of Chinese strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with special collections and archives, including support for fellowship programs and visiting scholar programs.
  • Administrative experience working in higher education, particularly with international offices and programs.
  • Ability to function effectively in a library management system (LMS).
Principal Responsibilities
  • Provides reference services and research support for topics related to World Christianity, mission history, ecumenism, and global theological education.
  • Supports the collection development partnership between the Divinity Library and area studies librarians across the University Library, building diverse collections that document Christianity as a world religion.
  • Serves as a selector for print, serials, and e-resources in World Christianity and related areas of theological inquiry.
  • Coordinates the visiting scholar program for the Yale Divinity School, serving as the primary point of contact for visiting scholars and facilitating their access to library collections and services.
  • Takes responsibility for the Stowe fellowship program at the Divinity Library Special Collections, including administering applications, supporting fellows in residence, and promoting the program internationally.
  • Provides appropriate library support for the Yale-Edinburgh Group on World Christianity and the History of Mission, including liaising with faculty leadership, providing bibliographic guidance, and engaging with conference participants on research questions.
  • Provides intentional outreach to international students at the Divinity Library, developing library orientation programs, workshops, and services responsive to their research and instruction needs.
  • Facilitate global partnerships with selected theological librarians and institutions.
Required Education And Experience
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may substitute for a master's degree in library science.
  • Master's degree from an ATS-accredited divinity school or seminary or a master's degree in religious studies or related field.
