SUMMARY OF POSITION

Operates the city library efficiently and ensures library meets the needs of the community. Duties include providing assistance to patrons, promoting the library, and assisting in its operations, including acquisition, circulation, and reference functions.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

1. Reports to: Community Services Director.

2. Other: Works closely with members of the friends group, other city officials, local schools and organizations, the media, other libraries, and the general public.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  1. Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in various sections that may include cataloging, reference, children's services, and adult services.
  2. Plans and oversees work of library clerk, volunteer staff and student workers.
  3. Assists with graphic design and social media.
  4. Assists with the preparation of budget recommendations and grant applications.
  5. Advises and assists library patrons; demonstrates the use of library catalogs and other library tools (copier, fax machine, printer); refers patrons to other agencies as appropriate.
  6. Responds to citizen complaints and requests; refers patrons to books or other library materials to further their reading interest.
  7. Classifies and catalogs print and non-print material, including audio-visual materials.
  8. Reviews new publications and materials and assists in selecting and evaluating materials for acquisition or removal from the collection. Reads reviews and purchases materials.
  9. Plans, participates and presents programs for the public such as story times, book talks, and Farmer’s Markets. Prepares exhibits, children’s displays, booklists, etc.
  10. Provides minor technical support for PCs.
  11. Participates in supporting library initiatives through effective displays, contributing to the library system's online presence, and supporting marketing efforts.
  12. Sorts mail and responds to correspondence.
  13. Maintains neatness and organization of library; complies with safety policies and procedures.
  14. Enforces library policies; may perform in-charge-of-building duties.
  15. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Basic library functions and practices; reference techniques and materials; social media and blogging; community demographics and needs; early childhood development.

Skill/Ability to: work well with adults and children; supervise, train, and motivate volunteers and student employees; ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; and accessing and maintaining social media sites.
