This is a corporate counsel role, ideal for someone who has worked within a company’s legal or risk management department, not just representing them from the outside. What You’ll Do

• Manage the defense of customer, consumer, and public lawsuits from within the company.
• Oversee a wide range of liability matters including premises, fleet, pharmacy, and product claims.
• Develop and refine internal litigation processes and policies for attorney‑represented and litigated claims.
• Provide strategic legal counsel to senior leadership and cross‑functional teams.
• Oversee legal cost management and collaborate with outside counsel as needed.
• Monitor legal trends and regulatory changes impacting our operations.
• Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents and contracts.
• Mentor legal team members and contribute to a culture of excellence.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and active BAR admission in any U.S. state.
• 5+ years of litigation experience in tort and personal injury defense, including trial experience (lead or second chair), OR 3 years in litigation + 2 years managing litigation for a corporate liability function, insurance carrier, or TPA.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• JD plus a degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or related field.
• 5–7 years of experience managing tort claims in a corporate legal or insurance setting.
• In‑house experience—preferably in a retail, healthcare, or consumer‑facing company.
• Familiarity with risk management, claims adjusting, and insurance financials.
• Experience with legal fee control, outside counsel management, and alternative fee arrangements.
• Background in insurance coverage, indemnification, product liability, and pharmacy or medical litigation.
• Florida Bar admission and bar admission in other Publix‑operating states.
• ARM or Certified Claims Representative designation.

Year End Bonus

As a year‑end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro‑rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.
