Job Summary
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan invite applications for a LEO Lecturer I position at 33.33% effort for the Fall Term 2026. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2026 and end on December 31, 2026.

Responsibilities*

Duties of this position are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a LEO Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.

The LEO Lecturer appointed to this position is expected to attend all lectures and all of her/his assigned discussion sections; be at lectures on time; attend and be prepared for weekly planning meetings (complete the readings and have plans/ideas regarding how to run discussion sections). The LEO Lecturer is responsible for grading all assignments and examinations and she/he bears the primary responsibility for computing final grades. Grading must be completed in a timely fashion. The LEO Intermittent Lecturer is expected to provide feedback to students. The LEO Lecturer must post regular weekly office hours and she/he is expected to be at the location specified for office hours on time and for the duration of office hours. If the LEO Lecturer has to set up equipment, etc. for lectures, she/he is expected to accomplish what is necessary early enough to assure that lectures/discussions can begin on time. The LEO Lecturer is expected to keep attendance records for the class and a careful record of students' grades. The LEO Lecturer must be ready to assume their responsibilities in the course beginning August 25, 2026.

Required Qualifications*

A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is required.

Familiarity with and course work at the graduate level dealing with the general subject matter of the course are considered very important, as is evidence of effective teaching and the ability to work well with students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Desired Qualifications*

Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required.

The successful candidate is likely to have substantial experience in interactive/inter-group dialogue. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching highly desired.

Course Description

Course Title(s): AAS 254 - The History and Evolution of Hip Hop.

Course Objectives: This course examines the emergence, growth, and changing character of Hip Hop culture over its forty year history. Using a wide range of readings, music, films, and other material, students explore the historical context for Hip Hop's birth and evolution and assess its continuing impact on American society. The specific topics covered examine the ways that Hip Hop has evolved over its four decades aesthetically, artistically, commercially and help students to develop their own understanding how and why Hip Hop grew from a small subculture practiced by black and Latino youth in economically and socially marginalized sections of New York City to its current place of cultural prominence, commercial and artistic influence, and broad acceptance in American culture. Students are evaluated through a series of writing assignments that use course material and engagement with specified sources outside of class to develop interpretations of Hip Hop at various stages of its growth.
