Job summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor invites applications for a full-time Lecturer III position. This is a three-year appointment with possible renewal, starting in Winter 2027 or later.

The Lecturer will teach core undergraduate courses in mechanics of materials or thermodynamics and heat transfer, develop and deliver engaging lectures, and support students through office hours and feedback.

Qualifications

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or a Master's with substantial teaching and/or professional engineering experience.
• Strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate teaching and the ability to contribute to course development and assessment.
• Experience teaching large-enrollment courses, coordinating multi-section courses, or developing labs and computational activities is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Teach core undergraduate courses within the identified focus areas (statics, mechanics, materials or thermodynamics and heat transfer).
• Develop and deliver lectures, assignments, labs and assessments aligned with course objectives.
• Provide timely feedback and hold office hours to support a diverse student body.
• Coordinate with faculty and staff to manage multi-section courses and ensure consistency in content and assessment.
• Contribute to course materials improvement and curricular development.
• Participate in departmental service activities related to education.

Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor ( https://me.engin.umich.edu/ ) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer III position. This is a three-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal, beginning in the Winter 2027 semester or at a later mutually agreed time.

Responsibilities*

The department seeks an outstanding educator to teach core undergraduate courses in one of two focus areas: (1) statics, mechanics, and mechanics of materials (ME 211 and ME 382), or (2) thermodynamics and heat transfer (ME 235 and ME 335).

The Lecturer's principal responsibilities will include:

• Undergraduate Instruction: Teach foundational undergraduate courses within the identified focus areas.
• Course Development and Delivery: Develop and deliver clear, rigorous, and engaging lectures, discussions, assignments, laboratory activities as applicable, and assessments that support course learning objectives.
• Student Support: Provide timely and constructive feedback, hold office hours, and foster an effective learning environment for students with a range of academic backgrounds and career goals.
• Instructional Coordination: Collaborate with faculty, graduate student instructors, instructional aides, and staff to coordinate multi-section courses and maintain consistency in course content, expectations, and assessment.
• Course Quality and Improvement: Evaluate student learning and contribute to the continuous improvement of course materials, instructional approaches, and curricula.
• Departmental Service: Participate in activities related to the department?s educational mission, which may include curriculum development, instructional committees, student advising, and other service assignments.

The Lecturer will be appointed on a nine-month academic-year appointment. Teaching assignments and other responsibilities will be determined based on departmental needs and the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications*

Qualifications include either:

• An earned PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field; or
• A master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, together with significant engineering teaching experience and/or substantial professional experience in engineering practice.

Applicants should demonstrate expertise relevant to mechanics of materials and thermal-fluid sciences, including undergraduate thermodynamics and heat transfer. A strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate teaching, as demonstrated through prior experience and a statement of teaching interests and philosophy, is required. Experience teaching large-enrollment courses, coordinating multi-section courses, applying evidence-based instructional practices, or developing laboratory and computational learning activities is desirable.
