Job summary

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Government Affairs Division seeks a Legislative Program Coordinator to join a high-performing team in Austin. You will support transportation and legislative research, organize documents, assist with project management, and coordinate activities affecting TxDOT policies.

The role requires strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, with responsibilities spanning analysis of legislation, preparing summaries, and supporting outreach

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline.
  • 2 years of experience in project, program, or legislative coordination; graduate education may substitute one-for-one.
  • Valid driver’s license; driving a state vehicle is required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes incoming legislative correspondence, reports and materials related to administrative areas.
  • Monitors and reports on legislative hearings and floor action; coordinates with staff to initiate proper action.
  • Performs duties of State and Federal Relations Representative as needed during absences or vacancies.
  • Attends meetings, provides analyses, written summaries and debriefings to Government Affairs staff.
  • Maintains files/records/logs, tracks progress and coordinates work to meet due dates.
  • Researches and compiles information to assist state and federal staff with projects, presentations and correspondence.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Government Affairs Division is seeking a highly motivated Legislative Program Coordinator to join our dynamic and high-performing team. In this role, you will provide essential support to team members, assisting with transportation and legislative research, organizing informational documents, project management, reviewing educational materials, and coordinating legislative activities that impact TxDOT’s policies and programs. This position requires strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills to effectively support the agency’s operations and engagement with state and federal policymakers.

Performs a wide variety of project coordination and legislative support work for TxDOT Government Affairs Division. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information. Work requires extensive contact with TxDOT districts, divisions, governmental officials, and private entities. Works with Government Affairs Business Operations Manager, Directors of State Legislative Affairs and Federal Affairs Sections. Reports to the Director of the Government Affairs Division. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objective. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

  • Analyzes incoming legislative correspondence, reports and other materials related to administrative areas; monitor and report on legislative hearings and floor action; coordinates with appropriate personnel to initiate proper action.
  • Performs the duties of a State and Federal Relations Representative as needed to support the division during extended absences or vacancies.
  • Attends meetings, provides analysis, written summary and debriefing of a meeting's activities to Government Affairs Division staff and/or Administration.
  • Maintains files/records/logs, tracks progress of activities and coordinates work to meet due dates.
  • Researches and compiles information to assist the state and federal Government Affairs Division staff with a variety of projects, presentations, and correspondence.
  • Assists in the development, execution, and completion of a wide spectrum of special projects, including legislative educational resources.
  • Assists Government Affairs Division staff with speeches, policy research, internal and external meeting coordination and execution, and correspondence.
  • Collects and summarizes legislative related information from staff, local partners, subject matter experts and other relevant sources.
  • Provides updates to the Director of the Government Affairs Division on significant department events, projects, and programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Experience: 2 years of experience in project, program, or legislative coordination, or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
  • Producing high-level analysis including research (technical, legal, federal and state legislative, and public sources), writing, verbal communication and presentations
  • Interpreting and analyzing legislation, rules, and regulations
  • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
