Job summary

The State of Iowa - Executive Branch seeks a Legislative Analyst to support the Senate Republican Caucus staff in Des Moines. The role focuses on researching, analyzing, and summarizing complex legislation and policies under tight deadlines, with precise attention to detail.

You will communicate findings clearly to Senators and staff, build relationships with legislators and stakeholders, and track policy developments from idea to law. A four-year degree and policy experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• BA/BS 4-year degree or equivalent experience.
• Three years of professional experience in legislative affairs, public policy, issue advocacy, government affairs, or related field.
• Demonstrated oral, visual, and written communication skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to contribute on a team and handle a flexible schedule, including possible compensatory time.

Responsibilities

• Research, analyze, determine advantages and disadvantages, and provide detailed synopses of complex legislation and government policies.
• Assess technical and political implications of proposed legislation and communicate clearly to promote understanding.
• Research and respond to Senator inquiries in person and electronically.
• Attend subcommittee and committee meetings during legislative session; prepare Senators for debates.
• Track bills, resolutions, and policy developments through the legislative process from idea to law.
• Provide information to promote or reject proposed legislation as directed by Senators.
