Job description

Are you an organized and detail-oriented professional ready to support the growth and vitality of our community? Join our dynamic team at the City of Decatur as a Legal Secretary. You'll be the backbone of our operations, providing crucial support to the Legal Department.

  1. Prepares, types, files, and distributes forms, letters, memos, complaints, instructions, check requests, and various other confidential documents relevant to the Legal Department.
  2. Prepares necessary documents and lists for processing demolitions.
  3. Answers departmental telephone calls, takes messages, schedules meetings, and answers or directs inquiries.
  4. Assists in the preparation of ordinances, resolutions, and supporting documents for presentation to the Council.
  5. Operates standard office equipment, including personal computers, typewriters, calculators, copiers, scanners, and fax machines.
  6. Assists in preparing routine court pleadings, motions, legal briefs, ordinance violations, and supporting documents.
  7. Acts as a clerk for the Administrative Court.
  8. Performs other related work as required.
  9. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by courses in typing and office practices, and two years of experience in law office work including typing, filing, and operating various office equipment, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  10. Knowledge of legal terminology and the confidentiality necessary for clerical work relevant to the legal department.
  11. Skills in typing, filing, organizing, and maintaining reports, records, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  12. Skills in operating standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, and scanners.
  13. Skills in answering and routing departmental inquiries.

Residency Requirement: Employees must reside within 50 miles of the City of Decatur. New employees outside this radius must relocate within 12 months of appointment to maintain employment.
