Job description

We're building the future of legal services.

Modern Family Law ("MFL") is seeking an innovative, systems-oriented, and operationally sophisticated Legal Knowledge Engineer to help design and build the next generation of AI-native legal service delivery systems.

This role serves as the bridge between legal expertise and artificial intelligence systems. The Legal Knowledge Engineer will work closely with attorneys, product teams, developers, and AI leadership to translate legal reasoning, workflows, procedures, and institutional knowledge into scalable AI-enabled systems and operational frameworks.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of legal workflows and demonstrates the ability to structure complex legal processes into decision trees, workflow logic, prompt architectures, escalation systems, and institutional knowledge frameworks.

This role is central to MFL's long-term strategy of building AI-assisted and AI-native legal delivery systems designed to improve accessibility, efficiency, consistency, scalability, and client experience while maintaining appropriate human oversight, ethics, and legal compliance.

The Legal Knowledge Engineer will help architect the institutional "brain" of the firm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own evaluation standards - rubrics, golden examples, and human-review/escalation criteria for AI-generated work products.
  • Translate legal reasoning, workflows, and procedural requirements into structured AI-enabled systems.
  • Design decision trees, escalation frameworks, workflow logic, and prompt architectures for family law workflows.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and operational teams to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
  • Help structure and maintain institutional legal knowledge repositories, workflow playbooks, and operational guidance systems.
  • Develop retrieval, prompt orchestration, and workflow execution systems.
  • Assist in building AI-powered intake systems, document automation workflows, and client communication systems.
  • Partner with product managers, developers, and AI engineers on implementation and testing.
  • Help define quality assurance, human-review, and escalation standards for AI-generated work product.
  • Monitor AI outputs for consistency, quality, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Participate in testing, iteration, and optimization of AI-assisted legal workflows.
  • Help document legal workflows, system logic, and governance procedures.
  • Stay informed regarding emerging AI technologies, legal technology trends, and evolving regulatory considerations impacting AI in legal services.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctor (JD), paralegal certification, legal operations experience, or equivalent practical legal workflow experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in legal operations, legal technology, workflow design, legal process engineering, product operations, or related fields.

  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into structured workflows and operational logic.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
  • Comfortable working in highly collaborative, cross-functional environments.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm regarding AI, automation, and the future of legal services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with generative AI systems, prompt engineering, workflow automation, or knowledge management platforms.
  • Familiarity with OpenAI, Anthropic, vector databases, retrieval systems, or orchestration platforms.
  • Experience in family law or other high-volume consumer-facing legal practice areas.
  • Experience working with software development teams or product organizations.
  • Understanding of legal ethics, confidentiality obligations, and AI governance considerations.
  • Background in legal innovation, legal operations, or AI-assisted workflow design preferred.
Characteristics of the Ideal Candidate
