About the Department of History

The History Department at Cal Poly Pomona was one of the earliestpioneers across the country in emphasizing global history. Our B.A.and M.A. students take a wide range of courses that help themdevelop broad content knowledge, and that provide hands-on trainingin historical research. Our undergraduate majors write a capstonesenior thesis based on original primary and secondary sourceresearch; they also take at least one class in digital researchmethods that encompasses everything from large text analysis tomapping to web design and podcasting. The faculty members in thedepartment include experts in the history of the United States(including California), the ancient and modern Mediterranean andMiddle East, South Asia, East Asia, Latin America, Africa, andEurope. Beyond topical courses, faculty members also teachinnovative thematic classes on the histories of transportation,nonviolence, science, capitalism, and sports and leisure, amongother subjects.

The Position

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions arefilled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding.Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on shortnotice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends inmid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends inmid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions mayalso be available. We welcome applications from individuals who areexperienced and student-centered to teach in the following subjectareas:

  • US History, California History and World Civilizations
Responsibilities

Teach assigned courses in the department's curriculum and serveweekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.Assignments may include day, evening, and/or asynchronous onlinecourses.

Required Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in History or related discipline in the fieldrelevant to the curriculum
  • Academic achievement in appropriate topic areas related toavailable teaching assignments
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in History or related discipline
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university leveland ability to furnish evidence of strong teaching.
Salary and Benefit Information

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based onprofessional experience and educational background and aredetermined by the hiring department. Initial appointments are forone semester only. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthlybase salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of unitsworked and are paid in six monthly payments for each fullsemester.

Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank andplaced at the beginning of the range. Anticipated hiring rangedepending on qualifications, not to exceed $6,221 per month. As ofJuly 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respectiveranks are:

Lecturer A: $5,507 - $ 6,677

Lecturer B: $6,221 - $13,224

Lecturer C: $6,825 - $14,523

Lecturer D: $8,593 - $15,211

In accordance with the California State University (CSU)Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is a state entity whosebusiness operations reside within the State of California andprohibits hiring employees to perform CSU related work outside ofCalifornia. It is also expected that faculty establish an on-campuspresence to fulfill their responsibilities.

The person holding this position is considered a "mandatedreporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect ReportingAct and is required to comply with the requirements set forth inCSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
