Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campusCalifornia State University system and among 12 such institutionsnationwide. The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acrecampus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K.Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on theterritorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people whoare the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The College of Education and Integrative Studies is a learningcommunity focused on meeting the present and future needs ofstudents in its communities. The college educates students tobecome highly qualified and significant leaders in society. It iscommitted to the principles of diversity, ethics and socialjustice, and life-long learning. Central to the college's missionis innovation and integrative thinking, reflective practice,collaborative action, and learning by doing. The college's fourdepartments include two undergraduate degrees and academicprograms-Liberal Studies and Early Childhood Studies-and twograduate departments-Education and Educational Leadership. Thereare 1,376 students enrolled and 41 faculty in the college.
Liberal Studies (LS) is one of two undergraduate departments in theCollege of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS). The Departmentconsists of the LS Program and Interdisciplinary General EducationProgram (IGE)-both of which highlight experiential or hands-onlearning, interdisciplinarity, the tenets of a liberal education,and social justice and equity. The LS Program offers anundergraduate degree and is founded on teaching from liberal artseducation principles and practices. The elementary educationpreparation option (Elementary Education: K-8 Pre-Credential)prepares subject matter competent candidates for a Californiaelementary education (multiple subject) teaching credentialprogram. The Interdisciplinary Studies option provides a foundationfor students to enter careers in government, higher education, andthe non-profit and corporate sectors and in fields like socialwork, counseling, law, and health, among others. The IGE program-a student-centered, discussion-based, cohort-basedpathway-offering a unique option for some traditional GE courses toexpand students' college and intellectual experience through aninterdisciplinary approach. At the heart of IGE lies the concept ofan integrated core: a curriculum that explores human experienceacross the multiple perspectives of different disciplines. The IGEProgram introduces participants to different ways of examiningconcepts and ideas, fostering a connective ability--a power to seeall knowledge as interrelated. The program emphasizes learning in acommunity, writing, and applied learning activities andassignments.
The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions arefilled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding.Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on shortnotice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends inmid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends inmid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions mayalso be available.
Comprised of a multidisciplinary faculty, the LS Departmentprovides an interdisciplinary education for undergraduate teachercandidates and students pursuing a liberal arts-based degree indisciplines related to their future educational paths or careers infields such as law enforcement, social work, and healthcare. Thedepartment pedagogy is student-centered and experiential (e.g.,discussion-based, service-learning) meant to model the university'sinclusive polytechnic identity. Instruction focuses ondeveloping students' proficiencies in critical thinking about andsynthesizing arts, humanities, and social and natural scienceknowledge to understand age-old and emerging questions and issuesrelevant to our complex, global, information society, particularlyin elementary education teachers' intellectual and subject-matterpreparation, and in general education. The position requiresteaching experience at the undergraduate level and an ability toteach critical thinking in an interdisciplinary context. Given theCSU system's new Student Success Framework, the departmentespecially values candidates that can effectively addressinclusivity and equity issues in the college classroom and teachsocially diverse students. We are also interested in candidates whoeffectively incorporate critical approaches to artificialintelligence (AI) and can facilitate student's critical thinkingand career development through connections between classroomlearning and real-world environments.
Teach assigned division courses in the department's curriculum andserve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend courses.Candidates should expect to teach in the following formats:in-person, hybrid synchronous, synchronous, and asynchronous andwill need to be able to access the Cal Poly Pomona campus.
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based onprofessional experience and educational background and aredetermined by the hiring department. Initial appointments are forone semester only. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthlybase salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of unitsworked and are paid in six monthly payments for each fullsemester.
Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank andplaced at the beginning of the range. Anticipated hiring rangedepending on qualifications, not to exceed $6,221 per month. As ofJuly 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respectiveranks are:
