Job summary

Manhattanville University’s Writing Center seeks Learning Specialists to provide one-to-one writing support to undergraduate and graduate students. The role involves in-person and online tutoring across disciplines, using evidence-based pedagogy to foster writers' development and independence.

This non-exempt, part-time position offers an hourly rate of $41.00 and 4-5 hours per week on the Manhattanville Campus. Housing is not provided, and benefits include tuition remission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Master's degree or current enrollment in a master’s degree program preferred.
  • Experience providing writing support in a writing center or classroom setting.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent students and students with disabilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be knowledgeable about writing skills, strategies, and evidence-based writing pedagogy.
  • Tutor up to 5 hours per week in person in the Writing Center.
  • Provide one-to-one writing support for students in any discipline and stage of the writing process.
  • Provide tutoring in multiple modalities: in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online.
  • Represent the Writing Center professionally in interactions with students, faculty, and campus partners.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in campus outreach as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance.

Job Description

Manhattanville’s Andrew Bodenrader Center for Academic Writing and Composition (The Writing Center) is seeking Learning Specialists to work 4-5 hours per week. Learning Specialists in the Writing Center collaborate with students across disciplines and at every stage of the writing process. Using evidence-based writing pedagogy, they foster students' development as writers, encouraging metacognitive reflection, self-efficacy, and greater independence throughout the writing process. Learning Specialists provide one-to-one tutoring in a variety of formats, including scheduled and drop-in in-person sessions, as well as synchronous and asynchronous online appointments.

Writing Center Learning Specialists, in line with the Writing Center’s mission statement, “strive to build the confidence of student writers,” “help students develop as writers and learn writing skills and strategies that will help them succeed at the college level and beyond,” and foster “an environment that is inclusive of all learners.”

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Be knowledgeable about writing skills, strategies, and evidence-based writing pedagogy
  • Be available to tutor up to 5 hours per week in person in the Writing Center
  • Provide collaborative one-to-one writing support for students in any discipline and at any stage of the writing process (brainstorming, outlining, organizing, drafting, revising, etc.)
  • Provide tutoring in multiple modalities: in-person, synchronously online, and asynchronously online
  • Provide effective, inclusive writing support to meet the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities, including students who speak English as an Additional Language
  • Follow Writing Center protocols and procedures by: 1) completing Post-Session Forms at the end of each tutoring session; 2) completing post-shift Time Entry/Reflection Forms at the end of each shift; 3) using Microsoft Teams to conduct scheduled online sessions and communicate with Writing Center staff; and 4) responding to emails and Teams messages from the Writing Center Director, faculty, and staff in a timely and professional manner
  • Attend all scheduled Writing Center staff meetings (typically held virtually once a month)
  • Represent the Writing Center professionally in interactions with students, faculty, and campus partners
  • Occasionally participate in campus outreach by representing the Writing Center at campus events and, as appropriate, facilitating or assisting with workshops, write-ins, and other educational programming
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance

Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Experience
  • Demonstrated experience providing writing support to high school, undergraduate, and/or graduate students in a writing center and/or classroom setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish strongly preferred
  • Experience supporting students who speak English as an Additional Language through writing instruction or tutoring preferred
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent students and students with disabilities in educational settings preferred
Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Salary:

This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $41.00
