Job summary

Brigham Young University is seeking a Learning Specialist in the Built4Life Student-Athlete Center to support student-athletes on academic strategies and time management. You will work one-on-one, develop action plans, model study skills, and monitor progress to foster independent learners.

You will collaborate with coaches and staff, provide weekly reports, and assist with tutor recruitment and mentor training, while aligning with BYUs Honor Code and values.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in education, psychology, special education, sociology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in educational/academic support.
  • Willingness to uphold and live by the universitys Honor Code and temple recommend requirement for LDS members.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with student-athletes 1-3 times weekly to assess needs.
  • Create goal-oriented academic improvement plans.
  • Teach, model, and monitor effective study skills.
  • Be available 2-3 evenings weekly for assigned students.
  • Monitor progress of at-risk students daily.
  • Write weekly academic reports with grades and assignments.
  • Collaborate with teammates to build academic support plans for teams.
  • Communicate with faculty about student progress.
  • Help recruit, train, and supervise tutors and mentors.
  • Contribute to best-practice knowledge for college student success, especially at-risk athletes.
  • Coordinate with Built4Life staff on career choices, belonging, and mental health.

We need someone who strives for excellence in all they do, and who can thrive in a dynamic, challenging, and incredibly rewarding environment.What You’d Be Responsible ForMeet one-on-one with assigned student-athletes 1-3 times per week and identify individual academic support needs.Write goal-oriented action plans for academic improvement and personal progress for assigned student-athletes.Teach, model, demonstrate, monitor good academic behaviors, learning skills and study strategies to assigned students.Must be available 2-3 evenings during the week to work with assigned students.Recommend students for possible psychoeducational testing as needed.Monitor at-risk students’ academic progress on a daily basis.Write weekly academic reports which include current grades, missing assignments, and other pertinent information about academic behaviors.Work collaboratively with the other Learning Specialist, mentors, and Advisor staff to create academic support plans for assigned student-athletes on various teams.Communicate with faculty about academic progress for assigned students.Build positive relationships with other Built4Life and athletic dept. staff, academic team members, and coaches.Develop and maintain strong communication with coaches about academic progress for assigned students.Assist with tutor recruitment, training, and monitoring as needed.Assist with hiring, training, and monitoring of student mentors.Contribute to the Academic team’s knowledge of current best practices and effective academic skills for college students with an emphasis on at-risk student-athletes.Collaborate with nonacademic staff within the Built4Life Student Athlete Center on student career choices, belonging issues, service opportunities, and mental health.Attend weekly academic team meeting and monthly all staff meeting.Work on various projects or tasks as assigned by Olympic Sport Director of Academics.What Qualifies You to Apply?Education/Experience Required:Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, special education, sociology, or other related field or an equivalent combination of education/experience.1 year experience in an educational and/or academic support settingWillingness to uphold and live by the university's Honor CodeAll new employees who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend, which may be verified during the application process.What we offer in return:This position comes with fantastic benefits , including:401k.
