Job summary

The University of Michigan seeks a Learning Specialist to coordinate Tutorial and Academic Mentor programs, supervising temporary staff and delivering targeted learning support to student-athletes with learning differences. You will report to the ASP Leadership Team and work to align services with NCAA rules and academic expectations.

Responsibilities include managing staff, developing learning plans, and collaborating with university departments to support student-athletes across semesters.

Job description

Job Summary

This position will coordinate our Tutorial and Academic Mentor programs including supervising temporary academic support staff with adherence to NCAA rules/guidelines as well as providing learning services as a Learning Specialist to a designated case load of Student-Athletes with documented learning differences, disabilities, and/or other academic and developmental risk factors. You will report directly to the Senior Assistant Athletic Director or a corresponding member of the ASP Leadership Team.

Responsibilities*

Essential Functions

  • Learning Services Coordination - 60%
    • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, coordination, supervision, evaluation, and time approval of ASP temporary, part-time staff including Program Tutors and Academic Mentors.
    • Delegate at-risk students to be assigned part-time Academic Mentors.
    • Work collaboratively with ASP Staff along with coaching staff to adjust student-athletes' academic support schedules around team practice, team travel, and other team obligations.
    • Work collaboratively with ASP staff to implement continuous improvements to the Academic Success Program based on staff feedback aiming to align with the ever-changing student-athlete landscape, academic expectations, and new learning technologies.
  • Learning Specialist Duties - 40%
    • Work with a caseload of at-risk student-athletes in a mentorship role while abiding by NCAA rules/guidelines.
    • Develop and implement targeted learning support plans tailored to each students' academic needs across each semester.
    • Provide early assessment and evaluation of student-athletes learning strengths and weaknesses to determine level of academic support needed. Refer student-athletes to University faculty, staff, and resources to support student-athletes with accommodations for diagnosed learning disabilities.
    • Meet regularly with ASP Staff about the progress of student-athletes associated with Learning Services and Tutorial Program and make adjustments to support plans as needed.
  • Non-Traditional Working Hours
    • Up to 45% - Supervise at least two evenings per week of Study Table during the fall and winter semesters. Be responsive to time sensitive requests that may occur outside of traditional workday hours. Supervise at least one Sunday Study Table per semester (fall and winter semesters). Work on-call when not in the building to monitor student-athlete appointment requests, communicate time-sensitive information with student-athletes and ASP Staff, provide academic support to student-athletes when necessary, and act as on-call supervisor for part-time staff.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise and evaluate Academic Mentors and Tutors and regularly provide individual feedback on job performance.
    • Coordinate with the Athletics Compliance office to ensure Academic Mentors and Tutors abide by NCAA rules and guidelines.
    • Assist in supervision and training of ASP interns.
    • Supervise the hiring and training of tutors and academic mentors.
    • Directly schedule all academic mentor appointments and oversee the scheduling of tutorial appointments via electronic scheduling platform.
    • Oversee the recruitment of academic mentors and tutors by developing relationships with various University departments.
    • Coordinate training sessions throughout the academic year (review employment process, expectations, and adherence to ASP, and NCAA tutorial policies).
    • Assess program needs (in cooperation with ASP counselors) and evaluate usage and effectiveness.
    • Manage and accurately forecast ASP budget in compliance with Athletic Business Office.
    • Set pay scale, approve, or deny pay increases, and monitor all temporary staff payments to ensure adherence to temporary staff budget as set by ASP Director. All time reporting will be done through Michigan's online server Wolverine Access; familiarity with online reporting is needed.
    • Work closely with Athletic Business Office liaison regarding temporary employee files.
    • Develop an effective temporary staff evaluation process and solicit student feedback on effectiveness.
    • Provide supervision for student-athlete mentor and tutorial sessions during nights and weekends.
  • Other Duties
    • Fulfill designated program-wide responsibilities as assigned.
    • Possess a working knowledge of University academic rules and policies, as well as NCAA and Big Ten Conference eligibility and progress towards degree requirements.
Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree, currently pursuing, or interest in pursuing a post-graduate degree in an area related to special education, higher education, psychology, social work, or administration preferred.
  • Experience working with students with identified learning disabilities and knowledge of learning styles and strategies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with a diverse group of students and staff.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to build rapport with multiple constituencies: undergraduate and graduate students, and department team members.
  • Previous experience working with undergraduates in a university setting or high school age students and have an interest in issues related to student-athletes' academic progress and transition issues.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and some holidays.
