Job summary

Rockford Park District invites applicants for a Learn to Skate Instructor position at the Ice Facilities. This seasonal role instructs participants in fundamentals of ice skating and hockey in a safe, friendly and professional manner.

Instructors may cover various tracks including beginner skating, beginner hockey, recreational skating, intermediate hockey, figure skating, and adult skate lessons. Schedule includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, with payroll and HRIS responsibilities to track

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 14 years of age with worker’s permit.
  • Must be comfortable on and around the ice when in skates.
  • Must commit 10–20 hours per week; evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must enjoy working with children and adults.
  • Must have good communication skills to interact with participants and co-workers.
  • Ability to problem solve in various situations.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs participants on the fundamentals of ice skating and hockey in a safe, friendly and professional manner.
  • May teach any of: Beginning skating, Beginning hockey, Recreational skating, Intermediate hockey, Figure skating, Adult skate lessons.
  • Communicates with participants at all times, providing regular feedback on performance.
  • Tracks progress and completes participant report cards.
  • Maintains open communication with Skating & Hockey Programmer & Director regarding participant progress.
  • Assist with special events at the Ice Facilities; help at registration.

Essential Functions
  • Instructs participants on the fundamentals of ice skating and hockey in a safe, friendly and professional manner.
  • Based on experience, instructors may teach any one in any one of the following tracts:
    • Beginning level skating
    • Beginning level hockey
    • Recreational skating
    • Intermediate level hockey
    • Figure skating lessons
    • Adult skate lessons
  • Communicates with participants at all times, providing regular feedback on participant performance.
  • Tracks progress and completes participant report cards.
  • Maintains open communication lines with Skating and Hockey Programmer & Director regarding participant progress.
  • Assist with any special events taking place within the Ice Facilities (i.e., public skate lessons, set-up/tear down based on event needs).
  • Assists as needed at registration table prior to the beginning of each lesson.
  • Utilize the Rockford Park District's HRIS system for all HR and payroll-related requirements and to accurately clock in and out for all shifts.
  • Follows all facility and operational safety precautions.
  • Attends all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education/Experience: Some experience on Ice preferred.

Work Environment
  • The majority of time spent in this position will be standing.
  • This is a physically active position that involves stamina on the ice.
  • This position primarily indoors on the ice rink, environment is always cool.
