Job summary

General Motors is seeking an Industrial Engineer - Indirect Materials to optimize material flow, kitting, sequencing, and presentation for lean assembly operations at the Lansing, MI site. You will collaborate with production, supply chain, and engineering teams to implement efficient material systems and PFEP across multiple lines.

The role requires 1+ year in IE or related field, strong lean background, and the ability to work across 1st–3rd shifts with potential overtime.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year of Industrial Engineering, Lean Material Strategies, supply chain, material operations, manufacturing, or continuous improvement experience.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or assembly environment with a strong background in lean systems and process improvement.
  • Knowledge of material flow, kitting, sequencing, part presentation, routing, storage, and internal material handling systems.
  • Experience supporting PFEP development, standardized work, and launch or change management activities.
  • Working knowledge of work measurement, predetermined time studies, or labor analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and independently.
  • Ability to work / rotate through all 3 shifts (1st, 2nd & 3rd).
  • Ability to work over-time, weekends, holidays, etc. as needed.
  • Self-motivated individual with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lean material system strategies that improve material flow, reduce waste, and support plant safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Define and optimize part presentation methods including direct-to-line, kitting, sequencing, bulk, and repack strategies.
  • Support PFEP development and lead station-by-station reviews to determine delivery methods and presentation devices.
  • Create and maintain material flow data, part routings, and master part tracking documentation.
  • Develop layouts and space utilization plans for lineside presentation, storage areas, and kitting cells using CAD or visualization tools.
  • Lead or support launch activities for new programs, engineering changes, and material strategy implementations.
  • Drive labor optimization and productivity improvements through work measurement and route planning.
  • Partner with production, supply chain, containerization, launch, and engineering teams on material solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement by analyzing operations, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing countermeasures.
  • Ensure material systems and workstation designs meet safety, ergonomic, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Coach plant teams in standardized LMS processes and lean practices.
  • Work as one team across levels to drive accountability, execution, and results.
