Leadership Management Trainee - Engineering

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Leadership Management Trainee Engineering (LMT-E) program ensures that new trainees have the necessary leadership, industry knowledge, and technical skills to successfully function as a production supervisor. This program provides a solid foundation in railroading, a strong support network, and the skills needed to ensure the reliability of our rail infrastructure.

This intensive seven-month training program includes classroom instruction, online training, workshops, projects, and on-the-job training. Trainees will complete an 11-week manager conductor training course and 15 weeks of learning competencies required to oversee the safe operation and supervision of capital work projects, track renewal programs, and infrastructure improvements.

The program covers leadership, safety, railway capital work project management, CPKC’s operating model, computer systems training, and exposure to key departments. Upon completion, trainees will be placed within CPKC’s network as production supervisors.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Learn and utilize railroad operating systems, applications, and local plans to assign tasks and manage productivity
  • Be a safety leader through active observations, rule compliance discussions, and preventative measures
  • Exhibit leadership capacity to effectively lead engineering department employees
  • Demonstrate competencies such as drive for results, leading others, and leading by example
  • Prioritize work with urgency, making decisions aligned with CPKC’s values and foundations
  • Complete and pass management train conductor certification; failure to pass will result in removal from the program
  • Complete all program phases successfully, achieving minimum evaluation requirements and meeting deadlines

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary technical education preferred
  • 1-2 years’ supervisory experience in relevant industries preferred
  • Railway experience in track maintenance or related roles is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and US passport with ability to cross into Canada
  • Ability to travel extensively and work in all weather conditions
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and time management skills
  • Flexibility, adaptability, leadership presence, and career drive

Training primarily in St. Paul, MN, with travel to Calgary, Alberta, and other locations across the US. Willingness to relocate within CPKC’s network is preferred.
