Job summary

Peter Paul RVA is seeking a Lead Teacher for its After-School Academy at the Coleman Center in Richmond. The role supports students in grades 4-12 with daily instruction, project-based learning, and STEAM activities.

The Lead Teacher develops plans, upholds high expectations, and ensures a safe, engaging learning environment. Responsibilities include designing lessons, collaborating with staff, maintaining records, and communicating with families.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a child-related field or equivalent.
  • Three months with a related background or equivalent credentials.
  • Early childhood certificate (30+ semester hours) or similar credential.

  • Collaborate with staff to design and implement daily lesson plans and activities.
  • Implement Peter Paul’s daily expectations and behavior system.
  • Commitment to total classroom engagement.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and daytime teachers regularly.
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees for planning and events.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Engage in professional growth trainings and courses.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

The After-School Academy program at Peter Paul’s Coleman Center is comprised of students grades 4-12 who receive daily instruction in core subject areas and provides enrichment activities. The Lead Teacher develops lesson plans that include project-based learning, learning through literacy, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). The person in the role must embody Peter Paul’s values and share a passion for the mission by overseeing a high quality, safe experience for all students. All Peter Paul employees are expected to maintain high expectations for self, colleagues, students and families and must maintain a professional, ethical, and responsible attitude to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Create a classroom culture that encourages group thinking, curiosity and discovery
  • Collaborate with other staff to design and implement daily lesson plans and activities
  • Implement Peter Paul’s daily expectations and behavior system
  • Commitment to total classroom engagement
  • Communicate with parents and/or guardians and daytime classroom teachers on a regular basis
  • Participate in staff meetings and serve on planning and special events committees
  • Maintain accurate and organized records such as communication logs, incident reports and other records
  • Participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth to acquire knowledge of current best practices
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
  • Required to provide COVID-19 vaccine documentation (or be approved for exemption), wear face mask daily and practice physical distancing when possible
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must meet three of the following criteria:
    • Bachelor's degree (or higher) or endorsement in a child-related field such as, but not limited to, elementary education, nursing or recreation from a college or university
    • Have three months of programmatic experience and at least one of the following education backgrounds
    • A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours;
    • A child development credential from an approved institution as defined in Section 22.1-289.048 of the Code of Virginia;
    • A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.
    • Have six months of supervised programmatic experience
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Experience completing lesson plans
  • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of current educational research
  • Understanding of and familiarity working in an urban setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree and substantial teaching experience
  • Experience working with the Virginia Standards of Learning
  • Subject matter expertise in science, technology, engineering, art or math
  • Familiar with Eureka Math curriculum
Compensation and Benefits

This is a part-time, hourly position that is expected to work Monday-Friday during program hours (3:00pm-6:30pm up to 20 hours per week) and will receive additional hours for planning time, team meetings, and educational training.
