Qualifications

• Education: high school diploma or GED plus completion of a CAAHEP-accredited first assistant training program.
• Meets ONE of: graduate surgical technologist program or practiced as a surgical technologist prior to 9/1/2009.

Responsibilities

• Functions as a surgical first assistant under supervision of attending surgeon.
• Mentor and preceptor for surgical first assistants and technicians; conducts inservices.
• Wears sterile technique and maintains sterile field; ensures safety and aseptic practices.
• Acts as a Surgical Technician when needed, without performing both roles simultaneously.
• Promotes patient safety and effective teamwork within the perioperative department.
