Job description

Job Overview

First Assist PRN at Methodist Hospital Hill Country – jump-start your perioperative career as a surgical first assistant under the direction of the surgeon. You will perform both surgical technologist and first assistant responsibilities to assist with safe, optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the attending surgeon as a surgical first assistant, providing visualization of the operative site, securing retractors, and maintaining a clear view.
  • Use permanent and temporary hemostasis techniques, including clamping, cauterizing, ligating, and applying hemostatic agents or vessel loops.
  • Administer post‑operative subcutaneous local anesthetic injection and perform running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non‑absorbable material.
  • Assist with placement of implants and handle closure of body planes with sub‑cuticular or skin closure techniques.
  • For robotic procedures, insert subsequent trocars after documented competency; for saphenous vein harvesting, perform the procedure after documented training.
  • Maintain sterile technique, monitor the field during procedures, and initiate corrective action for any breach in sterility.
  • Act as a preceptor to other surgical first assistants and support the perioperative team in CICOP, documentation, and safety protocols.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Graduated from a CAAHEP Surgical First Assistant, Surgical Assistant Program, Medical School Graduate, or an allied health professional with 2,250 hours of surgical rotation.
  • Minimum 2 years perioperative experience within the last 4 years as a surgical technologist or surgical first assistant.
  • Valid certification: CST (National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting), TS‑C- Tech, surgical first assistant certification (SA‑C, CSA, CSFA, LSA) or equivalent.
  • Complete initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by the facility and department.
