Job description

WHY VEIR?

Giving everyone in the world access to clean, reliable, affordable energy will require substantial expansion of global electricity transmission networks. VEIR is developing a new generation of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS)-based transmission lines, enabling long distance, reliable, low loss, cost–effective power transfer in far smaller right–of–ways. VEIR’s innovations overcome the main barriers to transmission expansion, enabling the world to access the very lowest cost renewable power.

The Team

VEIR is seeking a Lead Transmission Planning/Protection Engineer to join our Product Team. We’re looking for someone who is excited to work on innovative new hardware technologies and communicate their value and applications to all levels both internally and externally to establish business relationships, market strategies, and collaborative partnerships.

The Product Team is responsible for overseeing the requirements, development and lifecycle of VEIR’s superconducting product. Through close collaboration with the commercial and engineering groups, the Product Team ensures that the products developed meet the customers’ needs and align with VEIR’s business goals. The Team determines which product features are most valuable and impactful by evaluating factors such as the voice of the customer, market trends, technical feasibility and addressable segment size.

What You'll Do

  • You will be responsible for the design of protection and control relaying applications for VEIR’s HTS power line products.
  • You’ll guide the engineering, development, and operation of VEIR’s protection and control schemes for its HTS product lines.
  • You will work with VEIR’s commercial and engineering teams to link the business and technical aspects of our products as they relate to all aspects of protection, control, and monitoring functionalities and requirements.
  • You will help develop and engineer all the protection and control strategies, hardware, and software required for VEIR products to achieve the highest levels of reliability under grid fault conditions and abnormal events.
  • You’ll partner with customers to discuss and coordinate protection and control schemes between VEIR products and customer systems, including integration into substation protection systems.
  • Support and brief VEIR management in protection and control strategies, risks, opportunities, and issues.
  • Support the company’s strategic visions and growth to deliver on the mission of decarbonization.
  • Comply with safety standards and Company guidelines.
  • Promote safety, efficiency, teamwork, and collaboration.

Skills You Have

  • 5+ years of experience in electric power system planning and/or substation protection and control systems, substation equipment, and grid equipment and operations in transmission and/or distribution grids.
  • You have experience in grid operations, transmission and distribution projects, substation equipment, relay settings and protection schemes.
  • You have strong analytical skills, that will allow you to analyze all available markets, product, and technical data/information to gather new requirements, features, insights, and strategies.
  • You can think strategically to solve complex problems and continuously adapt to deliver the best solutions to our customers.
  • You have experience developing, calculating and documenting settings for protective relays, feeder reclosers, and switches to ensure system reliability.
  • Knowledgeable of IEC, NESC, IEEE and NERC protection and substation standards.
  • 2+ years experience working with fault simulation software such as ASPEN and/or CAPE.
  • Familiar with relay protection functional diagrams, wiring diagrams, relay setting software, layouts of control equipment enclosures and relay panels, elementary and schematic drawing.
  • You might have knowledge and experience in substation field installations and maintenance, grid real time operations, transmission planning, and grid event analysis.
  • Experience leading through influence and integrating across teams.

Who You Are

  • You have a bachelor's or master’s degree from an ABET accredited Electrical Engineering program (Power Systems preferred).
  • You are an outstanding communicator (written and verbal). You can clearly communicate goals, findings, and issues across all levels of the organization and can work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • You are a highly motivated, self-starter who is detail-oriented with a positive approach to problem solving.
  • You can work autonomously, with limited direction AND collaboratively across different departments, stakeholders, and customers to launch new products and continuously evaluate the performance of existing products.
  • You are driven by results - you gauge your success in measurable positive impact (not in how much you check off the to do list) and know how to ruthlessly prioritize.
  • Able to manage a diverse set of opinions, advice, and recommendations and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • You are highly curious and solutions-oriented, and excel at deconstructing complex problems into manageable components to develop effective solutions.
  • You are committed to buying into VEIR’s mission and goals, and adopting our core values.
