Job summary

WSP USA's Federal Power and Energy Team seeks a Lead Substation Electrical Engineer to spearhead substation design for projects across the US and internationally. The role requires leading engineering efforts, mentoring staff, and coordinating with clients, with opportunities in multiple locations including Boise, Honolulu, Virginia Beach, and Huntsville.

Ideal candidates hold a PE license, 10+ years of experience in substations (15kV–115kV), and strong knowledge of UFCs, NFPA, NEC, and IEEE

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• 10+ years in design and specification of medium voltage distribution systems and substations 15kV–115kV.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensed; US citizenship required.
• Experience with federal government project design (UFCs, UFGSs, FCs, NEC, ANSI/IEEE, NFPA, ICC).
• Consultant experience on DoD projects and client-facing leadership.
• Ability to lead multiple substations concurrently and mentor junior staff.
• Strong skills in electrical engineering calculations, plans, and specs.

Responsibilities

• Review third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
• Lead engineering work for substation design including site, grounding, SCADA, and protection.
• Develop single and three-line diagrams, equipment layouts, and bus designs.
• Create grounding, lighting, and grid designs; perform arc flash and fault analyses.
• Prepare electrical plans, specs, construction phasing, and layout updates.
• Coordinate with owners, disciplines, sub-consultants, clients; manage budgets and quantities.
• Mentor entry- and mid-level engineers and provide technical guidance.
• Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
