Caterpillar is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join Cat Digital Platform in Chicago, IL. You will own end-to-end software lifecycle, lead API-first REST services, and drive secure, scalable cloud solutions across AWS and other clouds.

Collaborating with product owners, architects, and cross-functional teams, you will translate business needs into robust designs, mentor engineers, and champion engineering best practices for reliability, performance, and maintainability.

Qualifications

• Proven ability to own the end-to-end software lifecycle and translate business needs into technical designs.
• Experience building enterprise-scale REST APIs and microservices with Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and API management (Apigee).
• Demonstrated decision making, critical thinking, and effective communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of enterprise-scale REST APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS cloud services.
• Build API-first solutions, define service contracts, payload schemas, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.
• Guide engineers in secure, scalable service integrations using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and enterprise authorization models.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical designs, user stories, and implementation plans.
• Provide technical leadership through reviews, decisions, and engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with product owners, UI teams, architects, and partner teams to deliver customer-focused solutions.
• Drive reliability, observability, security, and maintainability through engineering best practices.
• Lead quality engineering with automated testing and performance testing; support production issues.
• Own end-to-end software lifecycle including deployment, monitoring, and runbooks.
