Job description

Overview

Being good neighbors – helping people, investing in our communities, and making the world a better place – is who we are at State Farm. It is at the core of how we operate and the reason for our success. We're moving with urgency to become a Next Gen Good Neighbor, with technology that strengthens human connections and enhances the customer experience. As an employee, you'll spend less time navigating systems and more time applying judgment, empathy, and expertise in the moments that matter most.

Responsibilities
Grow Your Skills, Grow Your Potential

Are you a software engineer who leads by example, inspires others, and enjoys helping teams succeed? State Farm's Billing and Payments Area is seeking two Lead Software Engineers to support our State Farm Payment Plan (SFPP) team. This opportunity is ideal for engineers who combine strong technical expertise with the ability to build trust, mentor others, influence decisions, and foster a positive team environment. You'll help support and modernize business‑critical payment systems, including exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can accelerate the migration of mainframe capabilities to modern web technologies. Strong web engineering skills are essential, while mainframe experience is a plus.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead by example, demonstrating accountability, integrity, professionalism, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, encouraging professional growth, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
  • Build trust, foster an inclusive team environment, and navigate challenges or conflicts constructively.
  • Influence decisions, encourage innovative thinking, and help teammates achieve shared goals.
Collaboration & Business Impact
  • Partner with engineers, business stakeholders, and technology leaders to deliver reliable, customer‑focused solutions.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly, balance competing priorities, and help guide team direction.
  • Champion modernization, operational excellence, and improvements to the customer and user experience.
Technical Delivery & Innovation
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support full‑stack web applications, APIs, and integrations with mainframe systems.
  • Develop solutions using Java, Spring Boot, JavaScript, and modern frontend technologies.
  • Support modernization initiatives involving cloud platforms, containers, and AI‑assisted development tools.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues while promoting security, reliability, automation, and engineering best practices.
Qualifications
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example, positively influence others, and take ownership of results.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers through feedback and collaboration.
  • Strong communication, relationship‑building, and conflict‑resolution skills.
  • Ability to foster trust, teamwork, inclusion, and accountability.
  • Adaptability, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
Technical Qualifications
  • Advanced experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and frontend frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases, including PostgreSQL or DB2.
  • Experience with AWS, Linux, containers, and enterprise application environments.
  • Proficiency with Git‑based workflows, CI/CD, automated testing, secure coding, and observability tools.
  • Experience supporting business‑critical applications, troubleshooting complex issues, and contributing to technical design decisions.
  • Familiarity with modernization initiatives, infrastructure‑as‑code, and AI‑assisted development tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mainframe technologies, particularly integrations with modern web applications.
  • Knowledge of Billing and Payment systems or State Farm's technology environment.
  • Familiarity with ROSA, Terraform, Python, GitLab CI/CD, or Dynatrace.
  • Experience contributing to engineering communities, shared development practices, or design systems.
What Sets You Apart

We're looking for more than a technical expert. We're looking for someone who leads through actions, earns the trust of others, develops talent, and brings out the best in their team. If you're passionate about technology and making a positive impact on those around you, we'd love to hear from you.
