Job summary

Westerly Public Schools seeks a Lead Bus Mechanic to maintain and repair its transportation fleet. You will plan preventive maintenance, schedule repairs, and may operate a school bus occasionally. Strong auto/diesel knowledge and leadership are required.

This role ensures fleet safety, regulatory compliance, and timely reporting to the Transportation Director and Dispatcher. A CDL/driver responsibilities may apply, with a local Rhode Island employer support.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years in auto and diesel mechanics.
• Must meet all prerequisite qualifications to be covered by the district's insurance carrier.
• Knowledge of gas and diesel equipment, welding, brazing, shop presses, test equipment, air tools, jacks, dollies, and tools; ability to read basic schematics and manuals.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and advanced maintenance on Westerly Public Schools vehicles.
• Inspect, service, repair, and rebuild equipment; perform preventive maintenance.
• Provide guidance and oversight to District Bus Mechanic; maintain repair logs and safety records.
• Ensure safety compliance and timely reporting to Transportation leadership.
• Coordinate with state for bi-annual bus safety inspections; assist with bid specs.
