Job summary

LA International is seeking a Lead Scala Developer for a 6-month contract, based remotely with extensions possible. You will lead a team of engineers, drive technical design, and ensure code quality, performance and security across microservices.

Key skills include Java/Scala, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, and cloud platforms (AWS Azure or GCP). Experience with distributed systems and secure coding is essential; security clearance holders are welcomed.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading Scala/Java teams in enterprise environments.
• Strong background in designing scalable microservices and APIs.
• Hands-on with Kafka, Docker/Kubernetes, and CI/CD tooling.

Lead Scala Developer

6 Month contract initially + Extensions

Based: Remotely

Rate: £Market rates p/d - (via Umbrella company)

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, providing technical guidance, coaching, and career development support.
• Drive technical design discussions and establish development standards, best practices, and coding guidelines.
• Review architecture, designs, and code to ensure quality, performance, security, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with architects and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Support sprint planning, estimation, and delivery management activities.

Software Development

• Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-grade applications using Java and Scala.
• Build scalable microservices and distributed systems.
• Develop APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
• Implement high-performance, resilient, and secure software solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.

Key Skills/knowledge/experience:

• Strong commercial experience with:
  • Java (Java 11+ preferred)
  • Scala
  • Spring Boot
  • RESTful API development
  • Microservices architecture
• Experience with:
  • Apache Kafka or other messaging technologies
  • SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • Git and version control systems
  • CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps
• Cloud platform experience:
  • AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
