Job summary

Black Bear Diner in Sunnyvale, CA seeks an Assistant Manager to be the right-hand person to the General Manager, leading shifts, coordinating training and staff scheduling, and ensuring fast, friendly guest service and high-quality food.

This role oversees staffing, interviewing and hiring with GM approval, enforces food safety and company standards, analyzes costs, and maintains smooth operations during peak hours while developing Team Members.

Qualifications

• High School or GED; some college preferred; Previous restaurant experience required.
• ServSafe certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Understanding of P&L analysis, cash controls, labor analysis, and food cost calculations.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Proficient in Excel, Word, and internet-based tools.
• Valid driver's license and current car insurance.

Responsibilities

• Ensure that guest service complies with Black Bear Diner standards.
• Ensure that food is prepped, cooked and plated according to company standards.
• Purchase all food from authorized sources, using company procedures.
• Monitor utilities, supplies, and other cost categories to minimize impact; analyze profits and losses.
• Perform management and administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Diner General Manager.
• Develop and post labor schedules; adjust labor to changes in sale volume.
• Ensure food safety practices comply with standards and regulations.
• Interviews and hires team members with GM approval; process payroll accordingly.
• Assist in achieving financial objectives regarding sales, food cost, labor cost.
• Protect cash and company assets by adhering to control procedures.
• Lead floor monitoring of guest satisfaction and guide staff during peak hours.
• Maintain preventive maintenance and housekeeping standards.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies related to worker safety and alcohol sales.
