Job summary

Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Corrections Services, Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, LA, is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse 3 to join our healthcare team.

Qualifications

• Current Louisiana RN license or temporary permit or multi-state license issued by an NLC/eNLC state to practice as a registered nurse.
• Two years of experience as a licensed RN; OR a bachelor’s degree in nursing plus one year of RN experience; OR a master’s degree in nursing or public health plus one year of RN experience; OR a doctorate in nursing or public health.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced professional nursing care to offenders, including assessments, medication administration, treatment planning, and ongoing evaluation per nursing standards.
• Lead nursing team and delegate tasks to LPNs and RN staff within facility protocols.
• Respond to medical emergencies with triage and coordination of care with physicians and staff.
• Document findings and communicate status changes to providers for care plan adjustments.
• Oversee specialized clinics (chronic care, mental health, infectious disease, intake screenings) ensuring continuity of care and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain accurate medical records meeting legal and departmental requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mental health, security, admin) for patient-centered care in a secure setting.
• Ensure infection control, medication management, and safety procedures.
• Educate patients on health conditions, medications, and self-care to support rehabilitation goals.
