Job summary

ABB is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to lead engineering activities for substation protection and control systems. This full-remote role prioritizes candidates in Northern California while supporting projects for utility, industrial, and commercial clients.

The role emphasizes design authority, documentation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to deliver cost-effective, standards-compliant solutions. Requires PE license in CA and US work authorization.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master's Degree preferred.
5+ years of experience in protection & control projects for utility customers.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical one-lines, schematics, and instruction manuals.
Proficient software experience includes Easy Power, SKM Powertools, ETAP, Aspen, and EMTP.
PE License in California required.
Candidates must have work authorization to work for ABB in the US.

Responsibilities

Lead and support engineering design activities for substation protection & control/automation systems, including planning, coordination, and execution of new and retrofit designs.
Develop engineering documentation and analyses—schematics, logic diagrams, layouts, BOMs, reports, and calculations—to support compliant designs.
Manage project materials, construction design packages, and technical issue resolution with ongoing communication to project teams and customers.
Ensure adherence to safety practices, standards, and customer requirements while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and participating in training.
