Job summary

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Process Safety Engineer in Superior, WI to identify, assess, and reduce process safety risks across the refinery. You will partner with operations and technical experts to strengthen risk management and support safe, reliable operations.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree and 8+ years in process safety disciplines, with knowledge of OSHA PSM and EPA RMP, plus experience with MOC, PHA, HAZOP, and LOPA to implement effective mitigations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Safety, Environmental Science or related field.
• 8+ years in process engineering, operations, or process safety in refining, chemical, or oil and gas industries.
• Knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Program (RMP) regulatory requirements.
• Experience with MOC, PHA, HAZOP, LOPA and incident investigations.

Responsibilities

• Lead process safety risk assessments and risk management activities to identify, evaluate, and reduce operational risk across the refinery.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP while driving adoption of industry best practices.
• Facilitate key process safety reviews, including MOCs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, PSSRs, and risk assessments for plant changes and startups.
• Monitor and analyze process safety performance metrics, providing recommendations to improve risk management and operational reliability.
• Conduct hazard evaluations, consequence modeling, and root cause investigations to support effective risk mitigation strategies.
• Partner with operations, leadership, and subject matter experts to strengthen process safety awareness and foster a strong safety culture.
• Lead implementation of new process safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts to reduce refinery risk and enhance protection systems.
• Support management system compliance and auditing activities, including ownership of selected COIMS elements and gap closure actions.
